Seeking listening help in Austin area
@geoffkait @audiokinesis Thanks for the comments, but there's no trouble getting proper volume at normal distance in my setup. What I meant is that my speakers probably would not be a great candidate for the OP to use to test his 50w amp. In fact,...
The current best band in the world?
@slaw Nah, in my book, Son Volt is like one of those pre-season Super Bowl favorites that didn't make the playoffs. Cheers,Spencer
Marty Balin has passed away.
In tribute to Marty check out the Rock Legends episode on Jefferson Airplane. Marty's dedication and passion are evident. Listen to Rickie Lee Jones cover of Comin' Back To Me on her Pop Pop lp. It will move you. RIP Marty. Cheers,Spencer
The current best band in the world?
It's Wilco. They hit most of my hot buttons. The most important being a sustained body of work that both develops their own sound and takes just enough chances to push their boundaries in different directions from album to album. Not many bands hav...

Too bad my Sound Lab full electrostatics need more power. 86db on a good day. Good luck Barry, it's gonna be tough. If you just want to borrow my ears, I am happy to come listen to them anywhere around Austin. Cheers,Spencer
Switched from RCA to XLR Interconnects - WOW
@inna Lamm certainly does use XLRs at least they used to on their amps. My understanding is that the circuits were not truly balanced. Nonetheless, they probably met the criteria mentioned in this thread. My 4m run to my preamp always was connecte...
Switched from RCA to XLR Interconnects - WOW
I'm not saying longer would be better shorter. I'm saying that in longer runs, rcas are more susceptible to noise so the difference between noiser long rcas and long balanced would be more noticeable because the balanced would greatly reduce that ...
Help me make a decision! Turntable overload
You should get the specs of the tonearm and use the vinylengine calculator to see what mass cartridges are a good match for your arm to yield a resonance in the green section (ideally ~9-12hz). If you are confused by my comment please don't rush o...
Totem Hawks
Good comment. They are nice at lower levels and in small spaces, but they just aren't big enough and dynamic enough to rock out in a larger room. An apartment dweller's friend for sure. Cheers,Spencer
Switched from RCA to XLR Interconnects - WOW
I believe you had to turn down the volume because balanced will get you 6db more signal (and a lot less noise). Perhaps @almarg or @atmasphere can give a better explanation, but the gist is more signal, quieter and less dependency on what the cabl...
RCA to XLR vs XLR to RCA... Converting Input or Output - Does It Matter??
Thanks guys, I will take your advice and stick with what I have for now and if I run into an rca  to XLR cable down the line, perhaps I will give that a shot just to eliminate the adapters. Cheers,Spencer
RCA to XLR vs XLR to RCA... Converting Input or Output - Does It Matter??
@atmasphere Ralph, BAT says their preamps do fine using adapters into their xlrs & they sell adapters like I currently use without trouble. I was just wondering if replacing the adapters w/Jensen tranny and adding another cable would be likely...
RCA to XLR vs XLR to RCA... Converting Input or Output - Does It Matter??
Which Jensen ISO-max model would even do the job? I don't see one that accepts RCA inputs and has XLR outputs. I've just switched to a single ended Nagra phono stage and am feeding its output into my BAT balanced line stage. Currently I use a pair...
CD ripping for the lower end.
One of the main challenges to overcome with digital playback is noise (many types including electrical, RFI, EMI, etc.) coming from the digital player (i.e. computer or network steamer/player). This is especially an issue with older devices output...
CD ripping for the lower end.
Free XLD on your Mac is the way to go. Rip them to AIFF if you want to use with iTunes(which I hate), Audirvana+, Amarra or anything else. It supports tags, art etc. and is lossless. With AIFF you can download same files to your iphone for portabl...
