Speakers for 2nd System!
@freediver   Sorry I missed the 96 dB spec. I focussed on the Leben piece. Given his interests, many of the speakers suggested above (e.g. the BBC monitor types, Totem, ATC) are all inappropriate.
Speakers for 2nd System!
I will speak to brands I know, but not knowing your music preferences, understand that my listening is jazz and classical and I value clarity, accurate instrument timbres and tight bass. +1 for Totem - I own a pair of 8 yr. old Sky Towers, smalli...
Thick or Thin
I like to hear the orchestra as close to what I hear in a live performance as possible, not “congealed.” At symphonic concerts we sit in orchestra level seats 12-18 rows back, just above stage level. We get a good sense of instrument placement, bo...
Turntable upgrade
I too own a P6. As evidenced by the many posts, there are disparate opinions. One thing perhaps on which all can agree is that there are multiple upgrade paths, each of which can improve sound quality. My P6 has a Sumiko Songbird cartridge, simila...
There Is Nothing Like the Real Thing - Our State of the Art
I identify with the OPs observations and share them. I too enjoy chamber music concerts in a great venue. I agree with the many who note the futility of trying to replicate the live performance in your home. I find the same to be true with acousti...
Suggestions for phono preamp for LOMC's
@theflattire Modwright’s older SWP 9.0 and 9,0 SE did not use a SUT. The models you cite are current production models. As a 2008 review in Positive Feedback points out, no transformers are used in the audio circuit. The gain on the MC setting is ...
Suggestions for phono preamp for LOMC's
@lewm No SUT. Just the tubes, including a rectifier tube. You can check the Modwright web site for info about the models currently in production and get a sense of the design approach taken.
Suggestions for phono preamp for LOMC's
@lewm You are correct. When I used the term “specifically designed for moving coil cartridges” it is because the Modwright phono stages have no problems with LOMC cartridges with outputs of 0.2 and 0.3 mV, not just the 0.5 mV cartridges. Plenty of...
Suggestions for phono preamp for LOMC's
A Modwright SWP 9.0 SE, an older discontinued model, is specifically designed for LOMC cartridges and is an excellent American made tube unit. Dan Wright, the founder and owner, is accessible and helpful. Used units fit within your budget. You can...
Recommendations for a jazz record which demonstrates vinyl superiority over digital
@ghdprentice The device that presses the vinyl record is called a stamper. It was not atypical for some firms to use the stampers too long. This was particularly the case with high sales volume records. That’s one advantage of some of today’s reis...
Need suggestions on preamp
You’ve gotten lots of suggestions and face the typical conundrum of lots of different answers. I understand why you like the imaging of the LRS. I also understand why you like ATC speakers and their precision, clarity and speed. What has always wo...
Need suggestions on preamp
I don’t disagree with @soix that your speakers may be part of the problem. I’ve listened to the LRS and didn’t find it as resolving as say an ATC-19 or an Aerial Acoustics 5T, both in the $4k range new so you’d be looking at used. They are both st...
Need suggestions on preamp
I have a pair of Aerial Acoustics Model 8b floorstanders in a large room. They are relatively inefficient, 4 ohm speakers and power hungry like Maggies, but a more traditional 3-way rear ported woofer design. The amp is a well maintained Proceed H...
Need suggestions on preamp
Given your headphone setup I agree with those believing it will be hard to match its resolution and detail with the Maggie LRS. If you want micro detail look at a used Ayre Acoustics K-5xe preamp. It is extremely quiet and detailed without being h...
Looking for a great front ported bookshelp speaker recommendation
@blackiridium If you used to be an Aerial 10t owner, you need to audition the 5t. My son has a pair in a built-in wall unit with his equipment and tv. By toeing in the speakers the imaging is excellent and the sound beats the Harbeths, Spendors an...
