Accuracy vs. Enjoyment
I think I’m raising this question because of my current setup on which good CDs are sounding wonderful, but others not so much.  I had to send  my  vintage CJ preamp out for repair three weeks ago and have replaced it temporarily with a solid stat...
Oppo exploring additional production of UDP 205
Don’t give up hope.  Just got this message:”We received some of the units last week and will receive the remaining units mid-September. So you will likely receive an invitation sometime this month to purchase a unit.”

I just wrote to them, asking.Guess I’ll have to make do with the 105. Listening to a SACD on it now.Not bad at all!

That’s very sad.
Recommendations for a few high SQ classical CDs
I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned the Mercury classical catalog.Saint-Sean’s 3rd Symphony with Paray, or Prokofiev’s 5th with Dorati on this label are magnificent performances and blockbuster sounding discs.

Learsfool,I knew I should have re-listened to the Brahms 4th before, off the top of my head, I cited the example as being a solo. Laziness!
Oppo 105 D vs. DAC-transport combination.
What a difference with the new power cord.Hard to exaggerate how much better the Cyrus-Gumby combo sounds than anything else I’ve tried.

The coax (Morrow)  kicked in finally, but it doesn’t sound as good as the optical. Maybe it has to break in more

Learsfool,By any chance have you ever come across hornist, Doug Lyons. He is an extraordinary player. I once played harpsichord continuo to his flawless rendering of the trumpet part of Bach’s 2nd Brandenburg Concerto transcribed to the horn.

I know that the subject of Wagner can be a very volatile  one.If one associates Wagner with Nazism it is inevitable to have a reaction. I, personally, feel that we have to dissociate the music from the man. I know music does not exist in isolation...

Learsfool,In my research I found the overwhelming evidence and opinion is that Bach, NOT Handel was the main Baroque influence. It was said that when a new edition of the Bach Gesselschaft (just being compiled at the time) came to him, he would eag...

Just a word about Wagner.  His adoption of the Baroque is quite different from Brahms’.  Brahms is more typical of the “fire and fury” of the late Italian Baroque influence on Bach. Wagner’s Baroque leanings are from an earlier period, a lot diffe...

At least it wasn’t Shaw who wrote “Exit in case of Brahms.”That was Philip Hale of the Boston Globe.Brahms, about whom I wrote a dissertation, was music’s great historian among composers. Like Mozart, whose style was enhanced after his study of Ba...
