Philadelphia area audio club?
I've just registered with HarmonicDiscord board and will be posting some additional information there once I receive my registration key. Did not know that a Philadelphia forum existed. Thank you, Suits_me, for trying to create some additional exp...
Speaker Cable for Avalon Eidolons
I'm running my Eidolon's with Alpha-Core/Goertz AG-1 (silver) speaker cables connected to Atma-Sphere MA-2 amps. Its a nice match. But matching the speaker cable to the amplifier is as, if not more, critical than the match of the cables to the spe...
Atmasphere MA-1: mk1 vs. mk2?
Albert makes a good suggestion. Ralph was extremely helpful to me when I was considering buying a used MA-2. There was never any question about my buying used versus new, he was more than willing to answer all my questions even though my decision ...
Where is the best place to buy Chesky, Sheffield?

Review: Conrad Johnson PV-9 Tube preamp
Very nice review and commentary, Peter. Thanks. It's good to hear from someone else who enjoys the highly underrated PV-9 preamp. And I wholeheartedly agree that the phono stage in this preamp is it's greatest strength. If your unit was not upgrad...
System Reference Recordings
Aliu, CD recommendations are more problematical for me since I listen primarily to vinyl. Hopefully, others will contribute. Here are a few orchestral CDs that I've found well recorded and reproduced: Opus 3, COPU 8502, Concertos For Double Bass a...
System Reference Recordings
Here are some orchestral recordings on LP that will let you hear how well a system is performing. I've tried to keep mostly to some reissues that should still be available through the usual mail order sources (marked with *). Stravinsky, Firebird,...

What is the best "Carmina Burana" CD you've heard?
Thanks Travis! Fingers banging the keyboard without mind being engaged... Of course it's Orff. By the way, my favorite performance of the Orff has always been the De Burgos performance -- EMI SAN 162 (LP). Not mentioned thus far in this thread, bu...
What is the best "Carmina Burana" CD you've heard?
To insert a divergent view, and since you did not specify the Holst "Carmina Burana," allow me to suggest the original version -- Rene Clemencic and the Clemencic Consort on the Harmonia Mundi label: HMC 90335 (single CD) and HMA 190336.38 (3 CDs)...
Which components produce a convincing 3-D image?
I'm with Bomarc - speakers, room and source material have had the greatest impact for me. After that, tube electronics have consistently given me the greatest sense of dimensionality and palpability to instruments, vocalist and soundstaging.
Music to test with:
The following are a reasonable cross-section of the various LPs that I often use to evaluatge a system:Opus3 7900, Test Record 1: Depth of Image (If I could only use one LP to evaluate a system, this would be it. Very naturally recorded acoustic i...
Most Sublime Beethoven Symphony
I second the recommendation of Carlos Kleiber's performance of the 5th and 7th - truly outstanding. If you have an interest in exploring some "original instrument" performances of the symphonies, try Roger Norrignton on EMI - particularly his perfo...

Which sites do you go for music reviews?
For classical music, go to Gramofile, the archive of music reviews published in Gramophone. Today the archive is limited to reviews of CDs, but since so many classical CDs have been reissues, I use it quite happily for selecting used vinyl.
