CAT JL2 & Pre SL1 or Atma-Sphere MA-1 & MP-1
Macallan25, I'm a great fan of the Atma-Sphere amplifiers. I haven't heard the CAT in some time so I won't try to offer any specific comments here; hopefully someone else will be able to make a specific comparison. The Atma-Sphere gear is very neu...
Review: Aesthetix Calypso Line Stage Tube preamp
Thanks for the nice review, Jadem6. Including Jim White's email about Aesthetix's design choices and search new manufacture tubes that will work over time in this circuit was very helpful and interesting. I suppose I've been lucky on tubes: I've u...
Speakers that work with Atma-sphere M60 amps.
Avguygeorge, certainly various horns will fall into that category of OTL M-60 compatible. Note Duke's recommendation of the Avantgarde. Also, Cain & Cain, Zingali and others. It will usually come down to the design of the crossover..
Speakers that work with Atma-sphere M60 amps.
Generally speaking, OTLs are going to be happier with higher impedance speakers and speakers with smooth impedance curves (no big dips, not a lot of complex phase shift in the crossover). Impedance is perhaps more important than high sensitivity. ...
Maybe a dumb question about preamps
As Newbee points out, the answer depends on whether you already have a way to control the volume and to switch between source components (if you're using more than one). If you have an attenuator in the amp or in your source component, that's one ...
I am asking your opinion as to the best turntable
Bill, I suppose I will have to add my voice to these responses. The challenge is that we are all captives to some extent to what we've had the opportunity to hear. I'm a Walker Audio Proscenium Gold Signature turntable owner and a fan, as are seve...
Is there a best cartridge track force gauge?
Tbg, for me the answer depends on WHY one needs a gauge that is more accurate than the Shure or others. I'm a believer that the gauge only gets you into the ballpark because the optimal VTF setting must be set by ear and must be determined through...
Instruments of the Orchestra
Hi Aroc, I'm an example of a classical music lover and audiophile who has no formal musical training whatever (totally self-educated through listening and reading), has never learned to play an instrument let alone plya in a group, and cannot read...
What is biasing?
In very simplistic terms, tubes operate with a voltage applied to them to get the best performance in the circuit. The amount of voltage that needs to be applied to drive the tube optimally is known as the bias voltage. Some modern tube amps monit...
What are the characteristics quality recordings?
Hi Timf, thanks for your comment. As to reproduction of size, I tend to differentiate that from soundstaging in my own listening. For me, soundstaging is about relative positioning in the recreated acoustic space, and a natural rendering of the in...
What are the characteristics quality recordings?
Considering the sonics that make for a good/excellent recordings of acoustic music, I find the following characteristics important, in the priority listed:1. Natural frequency response with accurate timbre and harmonic balance. There is no absolut...
Where is Your Turntable?
Mine is on the side wall behind the speakers, with interconnects as short as I could reasonably make them. I intentionally chose not to place the turntable rack between or immediately behind the speakers on the theory that soundstaging might be co...
New cartridge, now some adjustment questions.
Jed, the Hi-Fi News test disc is very challenging and, basically, it is intended to show the breaking point in just about every setup somewhere in those grooves. My recommendation to you is to set aside the test record and play a good quality clas...
star grounding question...
See if this earlier thread will answer some of your questions: http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?ymisc&1102648311.
What do I purchase an Analog or a Digital tuner
Here are links to two explanations that are consistent with what I've always understood:From the Galen Carol Audio web site discussing Magnum Dynalab tuners...Magnum-Dynlab believes that analog tuning circuits provide performance superior to digit...
