Joule - Electra: Just How Hot??
Personally, I could not spend $15-30k on an amplifier that did not absolutely exude the essence of care, craftsmanship, and quality. Simple.
Magico Mini II vs. Magico V2 comparison
Why does every Magico thread end in a distaster. The brand seems to really polarize people. Dhaan, there are many legit reasons to criticize Dave_B, but putting him down because his system is not expensive enough is hitting 'below-the-belt'. Magic...
Speaker audition: a novice’s journey
Similar to you, I listen exclusively to Germanic-Austro-Hungarian-Russian classical music from the 1790s (Beethoven), onward. For me, it just does not hold if the soundstage is not there. I need to be convinced that I am sitting in front of an orc...
Speaker audition: a novice’s journey
I guess the strength of the Verity Leonore is it's efficiency. You would certainly want to use it with a tube amp. However, I do not understand the logic behind a rear-firing mid-range.Looking at some of the music you listen to, do listen to Avalo...
Wadia 922 vs 921
My understanding is that there are some new circuit boards and each DAC now has 2 transformers instead of 1. I was told that in addition to sonic benefits, this reduced heat and increase reliability, FWIW.The upgrade increases the speed and depth ...

Rockport's or Magico's
If someone were to give me a pair of Magico M5s, I am SURE I can get them to make music. Perhaps with VAC amps and gold cabling throughout. There are quite a few options out there.
Rockport's or Magico's
The Rockports are massively deep at 3 feet, and would seem to need a particularly large room. They might sound great in the correct room, but they would not physically fit in my room. Only in comparison to Magico can they be regarded as a bargain....
BAT Rex and Lamm 1.2 with WP8 synergy
I am also using a BAT Rex, but with solid state amplifiers. People say you cannot get tube-like sound with solid state amps, but I beg to differ. Perhaps it is because of the overbuilt power supply on the Rex. The Rex adds the texture, depth, and ...
Thinking of buying a solid state amp
Karan's having a sliding class A circuit, so they are barely warm to the touch.Pass Labs put out significant heat while they idle. They sound good when fully powered-on for at least several hours. My A/C could not keep up during the summer when I ...
Bad Hum Coming Through Amp, What Happened?
On the AC IEC inlet located on the component, I tape the grounding prong to block its connection to the power cord. This is the same as adding a cheater plug at the opposite end of the power cord, or pulling the grounding prong out of the IEC.I al...
Bad Hum Coming Through Amp, What Happened?
I use a piece of electrical or teflon tape to cover the grounding plug on the IEC of the equipment. That way, you are not introducing a cheap cheater plug into the electrical path.
Audio Research Reference 5 Preamp
Samuel,Please do not be disuaded from posting your experiences and opinions. Out of the 35 posts currently, yours was probably the only one that was helpful in addressing the OPs question. People should always take any free opinion FWIW, but at le...
do you use a pre-amp with your DAC?
Some DACs have a built-in preamp. The question is whether the built-in preamp is of better quality than a dedicated preamp. So it is not an issue of 'purity' by running direct. Volume attenuation is a very complicated subject, with many manufactur...
CAT JL-3 Sig Mk2s direct from Wadia 781i?
I would listen direct for at least the first 6 months. That way, you'll know what you have after full break-in. Combining the Wadia with tubes may be a good move which may circumvent the preamp. Pay attention to the power cord and cabling.Dependin...
