The impedance of those taps are not exact. Ask Cary what the actual impedance is on the outputs. It may be closer to 6 ohms than you think.

Every room is different and you just have to experiment. The calculator says my speakers should be 7 feet apart and 6 feet into the room. That would never work in my room. I recommend using your ears instead of a generic formula. 
How many enjoy low $ second system sound?
I have assembled inexpensive systems many times in the past and was amazed with the sound too. I think partially because I was not expecting much from the system and I just relaxed and enjoyed the music instead of being analytical about it. Also, ...
