Van Alstine? I believe double-blind tests for music reproduction equipment evaluation is the only method which might produce reliable, believable, and convincing evidence for differences in sound. However, I know that I have perceived differences in, for instan...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? Everyone quite rightly complains about the difficulty of arranging an audition of speakers not sold through dealers.Well, here's a proposition:I own Shahinian Hawks. In the next few days, I will be setting up a pair of Ohm Walsh 200's alongside th...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? Just so you'll know, the Shahinian Hawks and Obelisks and Arcs all have a forward firing 8" woofer transmisiion line loaded terminated with a 10" rear firing weighted passive radiator.I believe their bass power is a function of the loading with th...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? D110 wrote:The speakers that have jumped to my attention for this task have been the Shahinian and Ohm speakers and I was wondering if anyone had listened to both? Yes, I have. The Shahinians I auditioned were older Obelisks (for a short time) and...
Can Frequency Sweeps Damage Speakers? I can tell you that I used the Ayre CD to burn out all the treble drivers on both of my Shahinian Hawks. My Hawks have 7 treble drivers (+four mids) and are said to be able to handle 350 Watts without difficulty. And I still don't know if I can ac...
Does SS cost more than HS for superior sound? Sorry. I can't figure it out: What does "HS" stand for?
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em? Does anyone owning Ohm Walsh speakers listen primarily to classical music?I listen to orchestral music mostly and I find the differences between speakers are often stark in the area of massed violin sheen and richness, woodwind timbral sweetness, ...
Sundsmith rebuild. 14 weeks for retip ($250)
Shahinian Hawks or Obelisks I have Hawks and I think a lot depends on what kind of music you listen to and how loud. My experience is heavily based on loud classical orchestral music, so keep that in mind.I originally drove the Hawks with a VAC 100/100, a big heavy tube amp ...
Can I Use One Channel Of A Stereo Power Amp? I always use a dummy load on any unused outputs. An 8ohm, 10 watt resistor is all you need to protect your amp from accidents. This, by the way, is more necessary with tube amps than with solid state. I do not know the theoretical reasons for this.
Speakers in 10-15K price range for Classical music I'd like to add this to my previous comment:The reason I went to Shahinian Hawks in the first place (they replaced Alon Circes with a Thunderbolt sub and a factory supplied, custom designed x-over, not a bad system for classical) was that the Shah...
Speakers in 10-15K price range for Classical music For classical orchestral and choral music, I would suggest you make a real effort to audition Shahinian Hawks or Diapasons. They are designed by their creator to model as closely as possible the sound of an orchestra playing in a concert hall. The...
The Richard Clark "all amps sounds the same" test Why should I spend thousands of dollars for a "better" amp based on perceptions that are so ephemeral and delicate that simply testing them destroys them?I have noticed that the arguments against double-blind listening tests are identical to those...
The Richard Clark "all amps sounds the same" test Personally, I would love to be able to take part in a fair double blind comparison. I do believe double blind tests are by far the best way to get at the truth of our own perceptions. But to be effective in approaching that truth, I would want the...
could a different power cord cure sibilance? As I recall, the Dynavector 20xh is designed to work into a 47k load. Mine does. |
