tweeters & mids - what is their life span?
Another thought: Have you adjusted the levels of the left/right fronts relative to the center channel on your AV-8? Perhaps turning them up a bit when in multi-mode will balance them better against the Gallo.
Highest component/cable ratio?
Hey John- I've often felt the same way: If I could ONLY turn back the clock! If I had only been born without an innate love for live music! If I only had not become a sound tech, perhaps I could be happy with Cryin'Ear Hi-Fi equipment and would ha...
Biggest Baddest Audio Cables
Tbg- That's funny: I just got in here to recommend he try to find a pair of Fulton's Golds!!! Everyone used to laugh at him, until he hooked them up. It was fun to watch the jaws drop back then!!! He started the entire high-end cable industry with...
Is the best power cord no power cord at all?
I forgot to mention: Most gear(those with outboard power supplies excepted) will have an AC power transformer within the chassis which will generate RF and/or vibrations/resonances as well. By utilizing pure DC: this potential interference source ...
Is the best power cord no power cord at all?
Every noise source connected to the powergrid(from the generator to you house) contributes interference to whatever you plug into your wall socket. When running on battery power, these noise sources are eliminated, as well as the RF that an unshie...
Triode versus Ultralinear/Pentode
See if you can find one of these for sale: (http://www.stereophile.com/tubepoweramps/1200cary/) You won't do much tube tasting as far as the output tube(T-1610) 'cause there's only one company that makes them(KR). Then again there's the price of a...
ARC Reference 3 preamp: tube character?
You could probably better be served/pleased(based on your description of what you like) by a unit that could be stuffed with some of the British tubes(IE: Mullard, Brimar or Ediswan), or perhaps the RCA grey plates from the 60's. I always think of...
Is there such a speaker...(loud but smooth)?
Find a pair of Dick Sequerra's Metronome 7.7's: (http://www.sequerra.com/electronics/data/index.htm)(http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_detail.cfm?Title_ID=36370) These small monitors sound good at low inputs yet will remain very linear/undist...
Are tube watts equal to solid state watts?
Kjweisner- For a better understanding of how Watts, DB and perceived loudness relate, read this: (http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/voltageloudness.html)
Are tube watts equal to solid state watts?
Those meters on the old school receivers were(with few exceptions) NOT peak reading meters. They only showed average power output. Peak outputs easily exceed 10X the average output for a given listening level.
Straight wire and gain linestage?
OOPS- You wanted it with gain? I don't think you'll ever find the Placette Active Linestage for under a $1000.00(or $2k for that matter).
Straight wire and gain linestage?
I had a Placette Passive Linestage for a few years. The transparency is wonderful. No signature at all!! Can be had as rack mount or stand alone, with remote(power supply for remote in separate enclosure). All Vishay resistors. (http://www.placett...
How do you know when to replace the stylist?
OH- On the Van den Hul site: You have to click on "phono cartridges"(left of page), then "extra services" at the bottom of the cartridge list.
What exactly causes clicks and pops on vinyl?
At the time of pressing, release agents are used that can/will collect dirt from the atmosphere and the cheap paper liner records come in. That's why it's good to use one of those nice record cleaning machines before ever playing the disc(bought m...
How do you know when to replace the stylist?
At one time: Every serious audio salon(not going back to the "stylist" thing- honest) had a microscope which which to inspect your stylus. I'm certain(if you live near a metropolitan area) you could still find one. Really- any decent microscope wo...
