Placette linestage vs. Adcom 750 passive
The Placette is a simple resistor ladder, consisting of very closely matched Vishay Bulk Foil resistors, two total per channel, per attenuation level. The power supply for the remote function is housed separately from the attenuation(signal) circu...
Best Integrated, period.
The Musical Concepts KW-500 is no slouch either: (http://www.musicalfidelity.com/products/archived/kw500.html) IF you can find someone that's willing to part with one.
Why are older tubes so much sought after
Hi Mechans- I've got six KenRad bottom getter 6SN7GTs to go with my six Sylvania VT-231 bottom getters for backup power amp tubes when the RPs(drivers) and Ws(phase splitters) run out. I just bought another pair of RPs out of Australia last week, ...
Best EL-34 Amps?
Mr Magfan- Exactly! One of the most successful tube amps ever(the Dynaco ST-70) used EL-34's. The excellently designed and executed output transformers made that amp. They can actually sound quite a bit like music with some minor upgrades/tweeks, ...
Removing the ground on PC?
Some PS Audio power cords have a removable ground pin. (http://www.musicdirect.com/product/74108) I'm not certain about any other companies.
Power cords and soundstage
Douglas- Obviously Mr J is not of the ubiquitous "concrete minded" AudioGon faction(thoroughly mixed up, and permanently set). Mr J- Continue your quest, as there are rich rewards ahead. Happy listening!!
Best tubes under $100? for Fisher integrated
You didn't mention what family of tubes you are looking for. Here's Upscale Audio's URL. Kevin could give you some very sound advice, if you were to tell him your tastes/preferences and price range. His testing/screening/grading procedures are sec...
Bad tube?
Some NOS tubes are rated for 10kHrs of life, and just as many newly manufactured tubes fail as those that were made back in the 40's through 70's. The Amperex may last as long as you own the piece of gear. It can't hurt anything to mix tube brands...
Bad tube?
Hopefully you can perfrom the test suggested by Mr M, and the problem will simply be a noisy tube. If it were a grounding issue, the sound would be a hum rather than a hiss. For future reference: First rule of purchasing tubes for a phono stage or...
So warm like any players made from England.
Arthur- Kimber Selects will provide ANYTHING BUT the colorations described above. They are one of the most transparent cables available. If they pass a "warm", "sugary"(glazed) or(in other words) "English sound"- it's because something else in the...
Speaker Break-in
Mr A- Yes, it would be the same(BUT- reverse phase on both sections of one speaker).
Why are older tubes so much sought after
Again- Info on some of the precious few companies manufacturing tubes comparable to NOS quality/transparency, and the prices they are commanding: (http://www.kraudio.com click on "tubes") (http://www.elusivedisc.com/products.asp?dept=1681) (http:/...
What happened to the absolute sound web page?
Actually- 'AV Guide' owns 'TAS'. The site has been shared for at least 2 years. They own 'Playback' magazine as well.

Nick- I wish you hadn't posted that info. Now I've GOT to spend another couple grand on I/Cs!
