Your most disappointing purchase or audition?
Audition - Linkwitz Orion speakers (original design IIRC). After reading all the science behind them and several stellar reviews I was so excited for the opportunity to hear them. Very disappointing. Cannot recall exactly why because I forget by n...
Beloved?
Sells better than "hated", "disappointing", "blunder of a purchase", "below par", "sub optimal", "POS", etc.
Valve amplifiers
To minimize lurking tube troubles I minimized the number of tubes in my gear (while still retaining their audio magic). CDP has one tube, pre has three, monoblocks have 4 each. Been very happy ever since.
Bookshelf speakers $500 -$700
My search for similar quest brought me to the wonderful Adam F7 active monitors. Slightly above your budget ($898) but since they are active they do not require amp/pre. Well worth the added cost (although you could sell your amp and/or pre to fun...
Recommend me Bookshelf for Office
To add to the mix ... I was looking to do my office and was considering both the Ascend and LSA as well, but instead went with an active pair: Adam F7 ($898 at Sweetwater and Guitar Center). This relieved me from purchasing additional gear such as...
Texas Hurricane...the music of SRV
For clarity: IMO the MFSL releases are superior to the Legacy releases. MFSL are not as painfully detailed, but also are not bleached out like the Legacys. You can hear deeper into the music on the MFSLs.
Texas Hurricane...the music of SRV
I have not heard any of those versions, but did have the Legacy CD remasters, and since purchased the MFSL CD versions. They are clearly superior and far less digital sounding. Texas Flood, Couldn't Stand the Weather, Soul to Soul, In Step, and Th...
on the desktop?
I turned volume up about half way on each speaker, then control overall volume via laptop. I will never not get active speakers for a desktop ever again. And these F7 do not require a sub for most music as they are rated down into the low 40s Hz. ...
on the desktop?
For my office I picked up a pair of Adam F7 (if too big for her she could go with Adam F5). These sound amazing and are very easy to use on the desk. Laptop playing music (CD, or music ripped to hard drive, or streaming off the net) out headphone ...
Most overrated audio manufacturers?
Lse - do you have any thoughts?
Why Merlins sound better then Sonus Faber
more transparent, closer to the original recording without adding anything elseUnless you were there when the material was recorded, mixed, and mastered, and had a far better than average audio memory, or immediate access to both pairs of speakers...
Why Merlins sound better then Sonus Faber
Sounding "better" is completely subjective. Everyone has different ability, interpretation, and preferences of what sounds "best". So, if you think Merlin sounds better than SF, lucky you! You get to save 5x the amount of money. Go buy music with ...
Audiophile Active Speakers?
Don't know Emotiva, but these Adam F7 are seriously good! Not just for a "pro monitor". Just damned fine music reproducers, period. A real joy to listen to.
Audiophile Active Speakers?
I recently picked up a pair of Adam F7 active monitors ($898) for my desk. Laptop directly connected to speakers out the 3.5mm headphone jack via $12 cables (3.5mm connector on one end, split to balanced connectors on other). Speakers plugged into...
Subwoofer: should we even use them at all?
My mains in my main rig are rated -3db 55Hz, while my office monitors to 44Hz. In either case, I can listen to a lot of music and be mostly satisfied without a sub for acoustic, vocals, jazz, blues, etc., even some rock. But there are times I do n...
