What do you see as the downside of tubes?
Dave_b I was wondering what your view of "the tubes getting in the way" means?Do you feel that the solid state gear you listed equals or excels better than tubes as far as being able present the being there experience?I enjoyed solid state before ...
What do you look for in a pair of speakers?
I think all answers are right on;the only one left would be the WAF (wife acceptance factor) if that applies to your situation;makes spending the $$$ easier for me without the "the house needs this ...." comments;lastly let your ears decide and if...
Class A amplifiers - which are considered the best
Another vote for Pass as well as Threshold;also these 2 but I don't know if pure class A might be worth checking out Jeff Roland older model amps and Boulder also.

4 ohm taps or 8 ohm taps?
If you are really worried about impedance dips and overstrain then maybe invest in a pair of Paul Speltz's zero autoformers which raises speaker impedances and lightens the load the amp(s) are driving.I think he has a in home 30 day trial period s...
4 ohm taps or 8 ohm taps?
I agree with Al;it has always been my experience to use all available taps and then use the one that sounds the best to your ears.
