Is it normal for the woofer to move in/out slowly
On your pre amp do you have a mute switch;if so I would mute first and then power off to see if it happens.Do your amp(s) have a standby switch? It seems to me that you are seeing the affects of the pre amp tubes bleeding down and the power amp(s)... 
Tube or Solid State
Any chance you can hear the 2 amps with the speakers before purchase;I have usher rw 729's driven with roland model 6 monoblocks and audiovalve challanger 180 mono's both do a excellant job;but I do prefer the sound of the tubes over the rolands o...

All I can say is don't get caught up in all the hype and always let your ears be the judge.

If u going to buy used;there is a nice merlin setup with sub that looks interesting.You are probally right if buying new though as $$$ is up there.Give Bobby a call at Merlin to see if there are any dealers near you if interested;he's a real nice ...

Still learning just remember that as you quoted sometimes they seem too bright and other times quite nice and enjoyable that this can also be related to the recording;I am not familiar with your speaker but sometimes recordings can be bright. 
How do you know when the crossover needs changing?
Give Bill Legall of Millersound a call he maybe able to help you out;he's one of the best in the speaker repair and crossover rebuilding business.

I agree with Philjolet you should try both to see which you prefer.

I would take a look at the vincent sa-31,Audible Illusions 2A,and Belles 20A for tubes and second the Klyne for solid state.

Take a look at Audiovalve Challanger 180 monoblocks;you can run EL34,6550c and kt88's as they autobias.

I don't think you need to really panic about making a move into tubes;I was a solid state guy as well then moved into tubes using some of the advice already mentioned;I also bought a used tube tester and it did not break the bank as well.Tube roll...
