step up for mc There is an article in the September Sterophile by Art Dudley talking about transformer step-up devices for MC cartridges and how to select the optimal gain and loading for your particular cartridge. He discuss a relatively inexpensive unit from K...
Tube amps Tube amps are usually not as good at handling low impedance speaker loads due to their high output impedances. A typical tube amp output impedance is about 0.5 to several ohms, while solid-state amps can have impedances down to 0.01 ohm, depending...
Input voltage gain on levinson amps ? Hey, Arthur, nice job.
Tube amps I agree with the other posters above. I have WP7's and while they are voltage efficient at 92 db/watt, they are a difficult load in the bass. I tried some 15 wpc SET Cary Audio amps and the bass was flaccid and the dynamic range was compressed. Ni...
Input voltage gain on levinson amps ? The volume will be the same only if the voltage gain for the two amps is the same. However, even if the volume is the same, the two systems will sound different. If the systems are in different rooms this probably won't matter, but then neither wo...
Input voltage gain on levinson amps ? What you need to know is either the voltage gain of the amp or the voltage needed to drive the amp to full output. You can then use the two formulas to figure out the gain: P=Vsquared/R and Gain=20log(V2/V1).
efficiency- hope i spelt that wright. My Wilson Watt Puppy 7's have 92 dB efficiency, although at 4 ohms impedance they draw twice the current that one rated at 8 ohms would have. I tried some 15 wpc SET amps with them, and while they would drive them to reasonably satisfying sound le...
Should I upgrade from Sylvania 6DJ8 to better tube I agree with the above posters. I like any of the European vintage 6922's and 7308's. If your C-J uses 6DJ8's and isn't too hard on the tubes my favorite 6DJ8 type is the earlier Siemens CCa. Big, smooth, full with tight bass and huge soundstage. ...
Members with No Feedback One suggestion for those who have little or no feedback, if they wish to gain some positive feedback scores, is to buy some inexpensive CD's or LP's and make sure to trade feedback. That way you now have some positive feedback so that sellers have...
Was just Listening to Dan Fogelberg... Patricia Barber, Martha Davis of The Motels, Carole Kidd, Holly Cole, Marti Jones (highly recommend Used Guitars--great sound), Suzanne Vega, Billie Holiday.
Was just Listening to Dan Fogelberg... How about Michael Franks? Smooth voice/pop jazz. My favorites are The Art of Tea and Tiger in the Rain.
Why so expensive?? I think you are talking two different ideas. First, you reference costs. Well, as one other poster said above, most high-end manufacturers are small entities. So the cost of R&D and production, marketing, quality control, etc are spread over a...
Audiophile turntables of the 60's and 70's I had an AR Manual turntable during the 70's. To show you how much I understood about turntables at that time, I sold it to a friend of mine and bought a Yamaha direct-drive turntable because it was fully automatic. I later regretted that bonehead...
Phantom Arm VTA change from regular to 180 gram LP I agree with Thomasheisig above. I have an SME table and Phantom arm with Audioquest AQ7000Fe5 cartridge. The differences in sound in VTA on record thickness differences in this range are hardly worth messing with. There are probably cartridges th...
Unhappy with tubes so which transistor amp? I, like you, had tube amps that continued to fail in one way or another. I even had some OTL tube monoblocks that had the biggest soundstage I had ever heard. But I got tired of going to my music room and panicking when the amp failed. When I went... |
