Which phono preamp?
A used Sonic Frontiers Phono 1 comes to mind. You might even find the signature version at a good price, but I would get the standard and spend the extra $ on some really good NOS tubes. Also, be sure to match the impedance correctly with the cart...
Mark Levinson 37 to Chord DAC 64
I've tried quite a few between my 37 and 36. The Cardas was very good, a little bit laid back. The Orchid was a little to bright, fast but not musical on this system. The best cable I found was the Audioquest Falcon. It's no longer made. They do h...
Got a Thorens TD-147.. Questions?? Comments????
My father still has his Thorens table. It's about 25 years old. I don't know the model number. But I know it still plays reliably and sounds pretty good too. As Jeff implies: "You've entered the dark side--there's no turning back now"
turntable madness
Also, see the thread on the Thorens turntable--someone just got one on e-bay.
turntable madness
I can't tell you a particular model, but I can tell you that nearly all the Thorens turntables I've come across have been very good for the money. They are well built, reliable, and sound very good. My father has one to this day, which he has had ...
Suggestion on spending 3500
Kind of in the Garfish camp--a 36 and 37 with a Genesis digital lens. The lens might put you over $3500--but you can get it later, but I haven't heard the Aero Capitle either--sounds like I need to.
Electrical and Grounding Needs
This would be my recommendation as long as you have an electrician coming in to do the work. First get a 220 volt line to run to the subpanel in the audio room (or adjacent room). At the end of the 220 volt line connect a toroidal transformer to s...
Best Component Video Cable for 200 or less?
Better Cables. I've tried a few and Better Cables is so close to the top of the line Audioquest, it really doesn't make sense to spend more.

ROOM SIZE QUESTION
Tom's advice is very good. We use and recommend the "Master Handbook of Acoustics" regularly. However, you will quickly find out from this book that there is a lot to it. The room resonant modes are one problem, but there are many others, such as ...
Stereo, hi fidility, ultra hifidelity ?
As to your question about Hi-Fi, Hi-Fidelity, and Ultra Hi-Fidelity--they are marketing terms. Each time a company came up with a new process, or improved the old one, they would label it as such--just to create market perception of an improved pr...
Regrets
A pair of Klipsch Heresey's. They weren't doing me much good in the garage. These were the older Heresey I. I thought they were much better than the newer models. Now I wish I had them for my son. They couldn't be hurt and they were great for rock...
Are records harmed from no air conditioning?
Depends on the humidity. 90 degrees should not harm the records as long as it is not humid. If you live in Florida--well it's much hotter there so I'm sure that's not the case, but 90 dgrees with high humidity could create 2 problems. One is warpi...
What is the most expensive?
Gthrush: That's kind of like starting a poker game and putting in all your chips and saying--I have 4 aces, what have you got? Can't top that one--won't even try--and had no idea that Karhma made speakers at that price (my system seams so modest n...
old B&O turntable setup & new pre or new tt
A long time ago I had the same turntable. If you haven't used it in a while, chances are it's not running too smoothly. Mine got very noisy after a while. I also had the same cartridge--actually the cartridge was pretty good for the $. You will pr...
