best 'affordable' turntable with moving coil cart
Just stumbled onto this almost 7 year old thread of mine an thought I'd report back. I ended up buying a Music Hall MMF7 after a short time with a free B&O turntable.I rarely play CD's anymore, almost exclusively listen to vinyl, way more fun,...
Pat Metheny Fans, Great Suggestions Please ??
I find much of Pat's music has this 'positivity' factor, uplifting and positive, one of my favorites is As falls Withata.Saw Pat with Ron Carter last spring (cape may jazz festival) where he played this 42-string Pikkasso guitar which was amazingĀ ...
Whats the weirdest concert you ever attended?
Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, Feb 4, 1972, Irvine Auditorium Philadelphia. Little Feat with Lowell George was the opener.Rockette Morton came on stage with a toaster on his head, halfway through the first song, toast popped up. His way of ...
Suddenly, Porcupine Tree
I didn't connect with Porky Tree till I listened in my car, great driving music for long trips.Agree with ptmconsulting that the first three Riverside albums and some of Anathema like Fine Day to Exit/We're here because we're here/Weather Systems ...

Are marantz ma500 monoblocks better than an adcom?
I used to have Paradigm Studio 60's and was bi-amping them with 4 Marantz MA-500's so I'm typing from experience. The MA-500's are not bad sounding at all and the dynamic punch was excellent in this setup. But in the end, between needing two extra ...
Prog Rock
As an old ELP, Genesis listener, I've had my interest in prog rock rekindled over the last 10 years, too many great bands to list my favorites.Try going to one of the prog vendors, a number of artists are using MySpace to put samples of their song...
Power cord replacement where first?
The digital source is what I'd suggest, the upgraded power cord will both improve the input to the CD player and also filters the digital nasties that are outputted into your power supply from the CD player. Two for one. None of the other componen...

Recommended components on Stereophile Magazine.
I used to have a Sterophile subscription and eagerly digested the Recomended Components issues. I'm not a suspicious type, but..I did a little test - take the preceeding 3 issues, open to the 'Advertisers Index' in each and then look at the Recome...
Dahlquist speakers
I agree with SomeC59, the DQ10's excel at vocals. A friend has had a pair since the 70's and recently had them re-conditioned, so I'm very familiar with their sound. They lack dynamic punch, something about all those drivers. Also require a bunch ...
Paradigm Studio 100 vs Studio 60
Which ever choice you go with, try bi-wiring them (recomended in the Paradigm manual).I had the Studio 60's and found them to be a bit 'boomy'. The bi-wiring cured it, and improved the imaging.
Where can one purchase lead shot for speakers?
I also have the VS VR4 Jr's. A nice improvement is to use Herbie's big fat dots between the bass module and mid/tweeter module. Something about better damping of the vibrations from the bass cabinet made the mid/tweeter cabinet image better. Worth...
best 'affordable' turntable with moving coil cart
There have been a number of threads that challenge the superiority of analog over digital, which of course will vary depending on the quality of the source, either lp or CD. My very limited personal experience has been that LP sounds different, bu...
best 'affordable' turntable with moving coil cart
Thanks for the excellent suggestions. Originally I was considering a VPI Scout or MMF9.1, but reading others accounts of their re-entry into vinyl, it seems many are disaapointed so I thought I'd go slow and start cheap and see where it leads. I'v...
