I think I just smoked my Amp
If the fuse is blown, don’t replace it with an expensive "audiophile" fuse as the fuse might blow again as soon as you turn the amp on. If the fuse does blow again, obviously the amp needs to go in for service. And if the amp doesn’t turn on, th...
Does anyone on this Forum have any experience with Audio research ref 610t monoblocks
Very impressive amps! I’d be tempted as well. They are almost 20 years old and are likely on need of service. Does the original owner have any maintenance records from ARC or one of their authorized repair centers? In my experience ARC amps have l...
IPad Pro to preamp
I just looked at the WiiM Mini, that's pretty cool. My first foray into streaming was was with an Apple Airport Express 2 (802.11n Wi-Fi Base Station 2nd Gen A1392) that performed the same function. They were discontinued in 2018 but still availab...
What Digital to Digital Converter Do You Use? Why?
@ghdprentice  I always stay away from converters. Add extra stuff to the signal path is always a bad thing. I use what is native. You're closer to the end state of your hi fi journey than many of us who are either starting or are in the middle...
Rant against the industry with hopes for discussion on positive change
There's no shortage of theories as to why younger folks aren't interested in "hi-fi" or 2 channel audio. Here's one more.  I don't know of any folks under 40 (50?) who listen to music as a primary activity. In my experience, it's one of many acti...
What Digital to Digital Converter Do You Use? Why?
+1 for Matrix X-SPDIF 2 I don’t necessarily think that I2S will always bring an improvement over USB for any given device. However, in this case it provided noticeable improvement in SQ. The unit has three dip switches: MCLK IIS Reverse DoP...
Pair of Rel S510’s or Carbon Special’s?
Rythmik subs F12SE-XLR3 piano black, A370XLR3 amp. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. :-) I understand brand loyalty so if you like REL then who am I to say otherwise? A while back someone posted that they thought that REL subs made other subs look c...
Streamer creates a Wow experience
Congratulations @soix,  I found similar advice here. I initially bought the zen stream as in interim measure, I really didn't think I'd keep it for long. As others have noticed, it punches well above its weight class.  Thanks to @jjss49 for sugge...
arc ref5-se
Very nice preamp. HIfi shark will provide historical pricing. Recommend budgeting for tube replacement and service as there's no way of telling how many hours are on the Ref5 SE or how many owners its been through. If you contact ARC and provide ...
Time to upgrade the pre-amp.
40year old electronics are problematic as they likely are in need of repair. I’d check w/ ARC on the cost to ‘refurbish’ and if they even have the parts available.  You should be able to get a good deal on a used Ref 5SE and trade that up later if...
SME V Tonearm on eBay Hong Kong Sellers are FAKE!!!
If you’re looking for SME tonearms, try Alfred Kayser at https://www.smetonearms.com Alfred apparently stocked up when SME announced they would no longer be selling their tonearms separately. I picked up a new in box M2-9-R for my Gyrodec. He als...
Single mode versus multi mode optical for streaming
Single Mode (SM) optics and cables are used for long distances, 80km for 10 Gbps. SM is also more expensive than Multimode (MM). I really don’t think there are any valid use cases for SM in audio.    Hope this helps.
Subwoofers and Crossovers.
@dimbhaka thanks for reporting back with your results!  This is a very interesting solution and I hope you'll report back again in a few months after these changes settle in. I look forward to your update and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.
Wendell Diller: "You don't wanna put a subwoofer with a Magneplanar; it doesn't work."
I’ve had had Maggies for a few decades now, currently 3.7i. I’ve been on both sides of the sub debate/dilemma. Maggies are sensitive to room placement and when it’s right the bass is definitely there. There’s also more to how we hear than just ou...
