Audio alchemy .......REPORT Hi Kacz. I am using it with a Theta Gen Va DAC while my Theta Data III is away (I have had one die on me and this latest one seems terminal also - I am not enjoying this). But I have got to say that with the DV-525 in place I do not miss the Data ...
Audio alchemy .......REPORT Hi Kacz. A bit off the subject, but I have found the Pioneer DV-525 to be a great CD transport - wonder which model you have. However, I found that it desperately needed some deadening of the chassis - and had some success with Isogel small footer...
Cables:Harmonic/Nordost/Cardas Hi Bmpnyc. You flatter me. I really don't think I know a lot about these things at all. I just have this dreadful habit of stating my opinions in a very forthright manner. My, perhaps overly negative, reaction to the HT cables is borne of repeated...
Cables:Harmonic/Nordost/Cardas You are welcome to your opinions Lost, but my negative reviews of the HT cables are due to six weeks with a full set of the cables, that the importer had used for two months previously. It is not fair of me to leap to conclusions, but my experienc...
The REL Strata III? Very very good for music applications. Cannot comment on shaking the room or other such things Theatre-heads get up to. However the next model down is pretty good too - the Q100E or somesuch(?). Very good for music and easy to match. Also has a sw...
Sound without the Preamp ? I have had similar experiences with lack of drive from passives, but passives can work very well with tube power amps due to the high input impedence of the typical tube amp.
Aragon Amps any good for Planars? I don't want to be negative, but just want to caution you about the Aragon. I lived with that model for a while and found with very high resolution speakers there was a persistant colouration that irritated me for months, until I took the Aragon o...
Sound without the Preamp ? What you are saying Carl, sounds right to me, but depends on how the DAC achieves the volume control. For example in the early Theta DS Pres, they used some OP47s in the first analogue stage after the DAC. The OP47s drove both the fixed line out a...
Auric Illuminator, Optrix, others Yes Megasam. I think that getting a revealing system and then using the CD tweak to make it less revealing (or smoother, or warmer) when the source demands is probably the ideal way to go.
Cables:Harmonic/Nordost/Cardas This is a tough call. This system is very new to you and you are going to speculate on some final touches. The chances that the result is still going to be satisfying to you in even three months are low. On the one hand you could take the consider...
Auric Illuminator, Optrix, others My only experiments here have been with the Bedini Clarifier and the AudioPrism Blacklight. I will not comment about the Bedini right now because I have not used it in a while. But your comments match very closely with my experience with the Audio...
Amp stands- Do they work? I suspect Nanderthal is really just a computer virus set out to infect sites with meaningless negativity. Alternatively Audiogon has realised that Carl's outbursts are great for ratings and they created Nanderthal with this purpose in mind. Call m...
CD Player My recollection is that the 200 series transports are pretty good, with a lively and rhythmical presentation (many say - better than the 500 transport, which is dynamically dead). But unfortunately Meridian DACs are not good - I have owned the 200...
TOS or Coax? Firstly, if you try them you will hear a difference. Secondly, the Toslink is unsuitable for hifi. Thirdly, the difference is not the 1s and 0s that are transmitted, but the timing errors (ie. the gaps between the starts of the 1s and 0s are not u...
Sound without the Preamp ? No preamp can improve things unless there is something deficient about the output drive capability of your CD player, and only if driving the preamp is easier than driving the power amp. It seems that your Accuphase CD Player drives your amps fine... |
