POWER: conditioners vs filters vs cords I have never been happy with any conditioner or filter my system or in any other systems that I have heard. The only exception was with a friend's system when he lived in the city in a building that also housed a large amount of computer gear. I a...
Class "A" solid state vs. Tube amp.? I have tried, but have never found an affordable solid state amp to compete with a very good valve amp. I listen to a lot of acoustic music and vocal music. I used to stick to solid state because of the hassle of valves, but I was always struck by...
Cowboy Junkies fans........ Swampwalker - I am as bad at remembering titles as you - "All Whites Off Earth Now" doesn't sound right, but you got one thing right, it is a great disc. Personally it is my favourite Junkies disc. I like Trinity Sessions, but played it too much w...

Best ss Line Level Preamp under $10K ?? I recommend the Placette buffered pre - take the money-back trial offer - you will not regret it (unless you dislike the looks or ergonomics).
Want to upgrade my Sonic Frontiers Line2 Take the free-trial offer on a Placette buffered pre, and you will discover resolution you never achieved with the Line 2 (it beats the Line 3 also). The BAT sound is an entirely different kettle of fish - both from the Line2 and the Placette. You...
Best blues guitarist, Clapton or Green Surprised to see no mention of Lightnin' Hopkins amongst all the rest. His playing on his Smithsonian Institute CD is fabulous. Following are a few random comments on my reaction to the names mentioned here. Clapton is a wonderful guitarist in ter...
Who R U? Yes indeed Hdm, Junior Wells is fantastic, and Hoodoo Man Blues is one of my very favourite CDs. I also like a CD of Junior and Buddy which is an acoustic session recorded in France. These two CDs are the stand-outs that I have heard to date, with...
Who R U? I am 46, married to the most wonderful woman in the world, have two terrific girls 7 and 8yrs, who in turn have a dog, two cats and a mouse. I live in New Zealand and descend from the marriage between one of the first British missionaries to New Z...
digital confusion Thanks for putting it so well Sugarbrie. There are so many posts on this (and other) sites that talk about whether silver is better than copper, or if SS is better than tubes, or planars better than stats. The point is you cannot possibly put a sy...
Long Live 2 Channel audio......??? I recently auditioned an amp that took out (DC) one of my speakers. Living in New Zealand means terrible repair services and so I had a long period where one of my systems had just one speaker. I found that concentrating on the music was much less...
Important Qualities Other than Sound My little quirk is that I cannot stand Maggies, visually, regardless of how they sound. They are just too imposing an object(s) to have sitting in the soundstage. Maggiphobic?
4ohm and 8ohm speakers? The issue of 4ohm versus 8ohm is too simplistic. For example, my valve amps really rock with some (but not all) of the 4ohm Thiels, and drive Martin Logans beautifully, but don't do much with the 8ohm Silverline Sonatina. If you just look at imped...
Tube vs Solid State - Comparable Output? I understand the theoretical differences which suggest solid state should be better than tubes in the bass, and ditto for low impedence speakers. But, in one of my systems, the best amp for bass, and for the Martin Logans and Thiels they drive is ...
Mismatched power tubes sound? I lack the words to describe it, but I have experienced the sound of mismatched tubes - one set drawing about 50% more current than the other. Despite biasing, the sound was "odd", less natural, perhaps "phasey" describes it. |
