How to Attach Spade 10 AWG Solid Copper
"and would REALLY like to know what could POSSIBLY be gained by crimping ANYTHING after soldering it"1) Mechanical stability of the chemically bonded solder joint. Especially important in a speaker spade when you may torque down and remove an unkn...

BTW, the link you provided is a valid approach. Notice that the solder is at the end of the wire, away from the crimp joint. You want to play semantics? I've done many a connection that way myself. Just don't solder where the crimp is, after the c...

The free lesson is over. You (meaning those that need documentation) can experiment on your own. I know what works. I have built perhaps over 100 DIY audio cables of ALL types. Have a nice day, anyway.

And the band kept playing on.......The subject at hand are speaker wire spades and 10g solid core wire. We are not talking about AC circuit breakers, fancy IEC or AC plugs.WBT screw down spades are a terrible choice for 10g solid core. First one m...

It never ceases to amaze me how much information you read on the internet that is outright wrong. If the average person with average skills solders after crimping, the crimped connection will tend to be compromised. In this case, we are talking abou...

First solder at high heat using the least amount of solder to make a perfect connection. Then you can crimp. Do not crimp first and then solder.
Very airy sounding player under 1K used?
"But as I grow older, I find that I enjoy the system the way it is, and that I don't enjoy sitting very long in front of the unit when I could be doing other things. This is probably a good thing, since it will sound that much better with more tim...
Very airy sounding player under 1K used?
I own a solid state amplifier. What I posted here about "airy" digital is my opinion. IME, I prefer the air and instrumental separation of tube pre-amp vs solid state. I also said at the very least a tube pre-amp is needed to deliver the "air". I ...
Very airy sounding player under 1K used?
I owned an MF A5 for several years. You certainly are on target with that pick. Bass is very taught, tuneful, rhythmic with a good dose of dynamic contrasts. Plenty airy, with a deep layered soundstage.Good luck

No solid state pre/cd combo will deliver the goods in the air department. For digital to have "air" it must at the very least pass thru a transparent tube pre-amp. Hope that clears it up.

I see a vacuum tube pre-amp and tube output stage cd player in your future.
Belles 21A upgrade
Wig,No one can answer your question as tubes are opinion orientated and specific to ones gear/taste.There is no reason at all to spend more than $60.00 for a pair of 12AU7/5814A tubes for your particular unit. It would be a waste of money. The GE B...
Musical Fidelity strange noise. HELP
Then the cause is most probably a bad solder joint. I'd send it to Rick at signal Path (last I checked they still are MF service center).
Belles 21A upgrade
My preferred variant is the GE 5814A BLACK PLATE from the mid 1950's. IME though with your pre-amp, you will only get so far rolling the tubes. In order to make it sing, parts need to be upgraded.
Musical Fidelity strange noise. HELP
Your problem is either one of two things. When the industry changed over to lead free solder, many manufacturers had some difficulty working with it. MF gear in particular had a rash of "bad" solder joints that caused issues as you describe. The o...
