TAS review of Krell SACD:why?
If you believe what they said in the article, Krell found a new source for a transport mechanism. My guess is the units you saw being sold for half price are the older units with the Philips mechanism, which according to the article had reliabilit...
Next on the list for Mahler....
I agree with Newbee that 3 might be a little difficult to digest for starters. 4 is very pretty and easy to follow, the EMI re-issue from Testament with Klemperer is excellent. My personal Mahler odyssey took me from 1 to 2 to 5, then 6, so I'd su...
Recommend relatively obscure high end tube preamps
Although it's probably a little better known than the others mentioned here, the Jadis JP80MC (or JPS2, if you just want a line stage) matches your description of what the Wavac unit sounded like. A classic preamp.
Crazy? Lamm ML2/ML2.1 on Avalon Eidolon?
I think you would be making a mistake. The ML2s are great amps, but you will never get their magic when they are partnered with the wrong speakers. Think of your speakers and amps as a single component when you make your choices, it's the best way...
Acoustat Reference Preamp.
I used to own an Acoustat TNP preamp, my first high-end preamp (sister piece to the TNT amp, trans-nova technology). Is this the unit you're talking about? If so, it was very good in its time, favorably reviewed by J. Gordon Holt in the early 80s,...
Clever Little Clock - high-end audio insanity?
Zaikes, Guido, and others, I hope that that all this time spent on the computer writing about the clock is not keeping you from listening to music!!
Anybody tried 20th Anniversary Purist cables?
I haven't read this entire thread for a while, but the one thing that surprises me is that Purist, a company I've long respected as making excellent, neutral products, is selling a special edition version of its cables that appears to be anything ...
Clever Little Clock - high-end audio insanity?
By the way, for the record, at the NJAS meeting last week I took the clock out of the house and brought it back in on two occasions while people were listening to music on the system, not telling anyone I was doing it or even letting them know I w...
The Clever Little Sharp
Bgrazman, I've got one of those tube clocks in my office. Great conversation piece!
Nagra VPA versus Lamm ML1.1
I liked the Lamm better (and bought it as a result). The Nagra to me was excellent as well, but it was not as fleshed out in the mids harmonically--just a bit towards the analytical side of the spectrum. The Lamms are about as natural sounding as ...
custom made dustcover for Nottingham Spacedeck
I imagine that Gingko Audio will make a custom version for you in their nice clear acrylic. You should contact Audiogon member Vtvu if interested.
Gold CDs ...... too much?
I don't think you should lay the blame entirely on the fact that it's a gold CD. While I think that in general the gold CDs do seem to have a touch more resolution vs. standard CDs, remember that Mobile Fidelity does not necessarily try to duplica...
Purist or Kubala-which to buy for entire system
FWIW, Kubala Sosna claims its Emotion line of cables is 90% broken in in a day, and 100% in two days. From my experience with it, I think that's about right. Purist might take longer, I think part of it might be that there's silver in their cables...
Harry Pearson's comment on $600.00 Chinese CD
Now you've done it, Krelldog, they're going to triple the price on it before we can get it!
Lamm ML1.1 & ML 2.1
I own the ML1.1s, have not had the chance to hear the ML2 or 2.1 at any length. The ML1.1 is about as good as you can get with push-pull--an extremely natural, non-electronic sounding amplifier. While I could probably be seduced by the 2s, they wo...
