What High End Manufacturers Could Learn From Bose A good post, as usual, Onhwy61. To some extent, I think those companies you mention are starting to move in that direction, particularly in the home theater area. I'm sure a large part of the reason more companies don't is, of course, the cost in ...
Bitstream Dac's My recollection from back when the first bitstream players came out was that the consensus among the critics was (1) Bitstream players were cheaper to make and didn't need to match DAC chips like the so called "ladder" DACs (don't ask me if it's t...
Why no more Mercs? Is the end near? My understanding is that the contract Classic had was for the recordings they did and no more. Apparently either Wilma Cozart or Philips declined to allow Classic to do any more, for reasons unknown to me. Too bad, as they are spectacular and ther...
What are we listening to...for...with? An interesting thread. I must confess that I listen a little bit for both in my system; I might get a new recording for the sound (for example, an SACD), but if I don't like the performance or interpretation I won't listen to it much after the fir...
Girl diagnoses & solves mechanical problem Ah, that brings back memories. The reason I asked was I remember visiting my (now) wife at (then) Southern Seminary in Byooney Vister (I had to spell it to the operator when I was calling information!) in 1969, when it seemed like I was the only p...
Girl diagnoses & solves mechanical problem Sarah--Congrats on the tweeter repair! Did you connect them in phase (I once replaced drivers on my Duntechs and, after getting them out, found there was no indicator on the drivers for the "hot" and "cold" leads--no idea if it made a difference, ...
Wingate 4000A I think Sean is right. I seem to recall a reasonably favorable review by Dick Olsher in 1987 or 88 in S-phile, and/or a review in TAS as well around that time. I'll have to check the back issues. Didn't recall the 4000A designation in the reviews,...

Belles Research Corporation? ? I believe they're still in business. Recall seeing a Sam Tellig review of one of their pieces a few years ago. Nice stuff for the money, as I recall. Audio Connection in Verona, NJ used to carry them, may still, you might want to give John Ruttan ...
Monoblock disadvantage or...? Sounds like it could possibly be a ground loop. Are they plugged into the same circuit? Even if they are, you still might want to try to float the grounds on the amps with cheater plugs and see if that doesn't remove the hum.
Organ.. Thank you for the recommendations Jimmy--I've been looking for a good Vierne disc with the Carillon de Westminster on it, I'll see if it's in my Gothic catalog, otherwise I'll check your source.
Replacing SP11 mK2 When I replaced my SP-11 MkII about 10 years ago, I was considering an LS-2/Vendetta combination, which I recall had significantly better ultimate resolution than the SP-11. One listen to a Jadis JPL after hearing the LS-2, though, hooked me on th...
Cough vigilante EMM4, if you ever move to the NYC area we're calling you in as an enforcer at the NJPAC!
What's your profession? Age? Mezmo, with the salaries and bonuses we've been paying you young whippersnappers, I can't believe you are a poor stepchild :>)!! I'd think your main problem would be having any time to enjoy your system, given your profession.
How Do You Decide What to Listen To? Nice thread, Onhwy61. Except in the case where I've just bought something and want to hear it, I almost always choose by my mood, which is often influenced by a recent concert I've been to or a recording I heard on the radio coming home that night... |
