Ortofon/Dynavector ? cartridge characteristics
The above suggestions for the Ortofon A90 and Dynavector XV1s are both seemingly very good ones, but the A90 is now out of production and hard to find (I'm running an A90), and I don't know what kind of synergy the Dynavector has with the Triplana...
Considering analog...but nervous
Most places will take back new vinyl that has problems, yes, but always pay with a card so you can do a chargeback if your seller tries to make you pay for defective merchandise (the law is on your side in most states, but practically speaking, yo...
Wilson Watt Puppy, which version?
Only one of the above posters addresses the primary weakness of the WattPuppy, and only does so indirectly - up through and including version 7, the speaker used a Focal tweeter that suffers from an audible resonance in the mid-treble, and this ma...
Any one have experience with Audio Physic Virgo?
Yeah - they're not completely gutless, but they're definitely a finesse speaker and not designed for the dinosaur stomping nature of home theater. They're one of the best soundstaging speakers around - a good choice for high-end two-channel music i...
The economics of LP reissues
Bucoero117: 3000 in sales - I have heard something to that effect as well. But 3000 at what price (wholesale to retailers)? What are "typical royalties, mastering, stamping, packaging and distribution to retailing" costs? Putting aside for a moment...
Experience w/ 40-75 watt amps on Dunlavy IVs
I ran a pair of SC-III's for about six months with my VAC Renaissance 70/70 Mk. III, which puts out about 65 watts per channel. It sounded fantastic, but the VAC cost $14,000 in Year 2000 dollars so it SHOULD have sounded damn good.
How can anyone afford this ?
I lived in a pre-war building with concrete walls - no one ever complained in my building, but someone in the next building over once felt compelled to chuck pennies at my window until she got my attention ("I really like Neil Young, too, but I ca...
Is there an app to turn on/off a krell interg amp?
Finding an app is beside the point - there are a number of issues here. First, the Krell integrated should be left on 24/7, both for purposes of component longevity and for sound quality. If it was Class A biased and drawing 500 watts from the wal...
How can anyone afford this ?
I was talking about Manhattan below 96th Street - what borough are you talking about? Paul Stewart is not that great of a store - here's the shoe page from their site:http://www.paulstuart.com/category_template_viewall.cfm?MainCatId=14&ProdCat...
How can anyone afford this ?
$100K is what a good shoe salesman makes in NYC - the cost of living is 40% higher than the next highest city (San Francisco). $10 will barely buy you a mediocre sandwich at Starbucks here. $2k/month will get you a tiny dump of an apartment, even ...
How can anyone afford this ?
Onhwy61: Sounds like you managed to maintain the habits of a tourist. Congratulations.
How can anyone afford this ?
I lived on the Upper East Side for fourteen years and commuted in for most of three more. The majority of people who live in the city would likely say that by the time they get home from work (assuming they in fact get home), they're so fried that...
Kudos to Madisound
PartsConnexion up in Ontario, Chris Johnson's company (he was a principal of Sonic Frontiers), is also very good for electronics parts and tubes - they try very hard to help.
Phono Input or new Phono preamp?
The overload margin is the amount of voltage the phono input can take from the cartridge before it overloads (saturates). The 29 db. reported in the owner's manual is an excellent figure - 20 db. is common with high-end phono stages (the higher, t...
Troubles with Sound-Smith return communications?
Gerrym5:I know Peter well and have always found him (and his colleagues) to be very responsive and no BS. I want to point out that he is, at this point, the only person left doing high-end cartridge repair IN THE WORLD - I'm not talking about reti...
