Best $500 cartridge? Dynavector DV-20XH?
There are many. The Grado Sonata, assuming proper matching to the arm, is a player in the $500 range. I have owned one for over five years and used it on a VPI 10.5 and Rega RB-300 to great effect.
Levinson 36 DAC vrs. 360S DAC Which is better?
I ran a 36 for a couple of months and then swapped it out for a 360s, in what most people would consider a highly revealing system. The 360s is of course better, but the difference in my system was subtle (and the subtle was not the kind of "subtl...
Help to make a choice: BAT; VAC; E.A.R.
Tvad:Just saw your post. No, I have not heard the PHi amps. I discussed the basic 220's versus the 140/140's with Kevin Hayes in the Spring of 2003, however, and he seemed to indicate that the 220's had a bit more punch, which I suppose makes sens...

Maril555:It would depend upon the size of your listening room and the type of music you listen to.The 30/30 will certainly drive the VR4, but my guess is that a 70/70 would be better on any 89 db. speaker. If immediate cost is an issue, you could ...
Help to make a choice: BAT; VAC; E.A.R.
The 30/30 and 70/70 are the same basic amp, with the same circuit and parts quality (the "signature" versions, regardless of whether the amp is the 30/30, 70/70 or the 140/140 monoblocks, have the best parts quality), the 70/70 having twice the nu...
Help to make a choice: BAT; VAC; E.A.R.
Although expensive at $14,000 new, there were quite a few VAC 70/70's sold while the amp was in regular production. They come up for sale used on Audiogon pretty frequently, and can be had for good prices because most people don't know what they a...
Help to make a choice: BAT; VAC; E.A.R.
I think the VAC Renaissance 70/70 would be better than what has been mentioned. It is totally dual mono all the way to the power cords and power switches, and is enormously powerful for a 65 watt amp (that wattage figure is meaningless). It has aut...
What other hobby or hobbies do you have?
Speeking of bikes, I was stopped by a particularly large motorcycle this morning. It was a Triumph with a 2,200 cc. engine. Gee, times were that a bike with a 1,200 cc. engine was considered about as quick as they gotiten. the thinh had a rear tir...
A brutal review of the Wilson Maxx
(1) Assuming there is a good chance that someone at Wilson will read this thread, I would like to seize this opportunity to suggest that you reconsider the aesthetics of your products: in my opinion, the looks of your speakers are needlessly holdi...
Crown commercial amps for home use?
In a revealing system, it will sound pretty dreadful -- one-dimensional because of all the feedback used in the circuit, low transparency and grainy -- in short, solid-state at its worst. Those things are for P.A. systems, not high-end, two-channe...
Which Tube Preamp under $10K?
Atma-Sphere is supurb equipment -- well worth a listen. Perhaps you already know this -- in buying a tube preamp to mate with a solid-state amp, it is important to make sure that the output impedence of the preamp and input impedence of the amp ar...
Which Tube Preamp under $10K?
This is where Judy 426 comes in and advises you to spend $5k on a preamp, and $5k for speakers to replace your B&W N803's. I agree with her (you did write "[A]ll comments and suggestions welcome").

bryston warm up time
Further to my above post, I had a Bryston 4B-ST for six years. I left it on 24/7 except for electrical storms and times when I would not be home for a week or more at a time. When I would power it up after such down times, it would take a day to r...
bryston warm up time
Anywhere from twelve hours to two days (Naim amps, much digital gear) is required for thermal stabilization and full performance. This issue, and the related issue of whether leaving equipment turned on 24/7 prolongs its life, reappears continuall...
