What sends shivers down your spine when you play it on your system?
@mapman i know the Iona Brown with Sir Neville Marriner (the “first” one) recording of “The Lark Ascending” on Argo the best. Maybe it was love at first sight, but that’s a great performance. I like the “Fantasia on a Theme By Thomas Tallis”, same...
Jazz for aficionados
Billy Strayhorn, "The Peaceful Side". I have listened to different cuts over the years, but never listened to the entire record straight through. He always sounded like he was in complete control with not one extra note, and none left out. Streame...
I'm never going to hear a megaspeaker in a good room am I?
Erik, I think @mijostyn has expressed the solution for your listening challenge. Send out an open request to Audiogon readers who own a system that fits the $40k speaker criterion and politely ask to audition their systems. In return, you promise ...
What are you streaming tonight?
Make that, “Giri/Haji”.
What are you streaming tonight?
I loved the Amazon series, “Hiri/Haji”, and the soundtrack is a lot of fun. I manually made a playlist in Tidal. There are a lot of cool tunes. It’s very Quentin Tarantino-esque.
Integrated amp suggestions.
I have owned a Simaudio Neo Ace 240i for well over a year, and I like it it a lot, playing into Dali 5's and a Dynaudio subwoofer. It has a built in DAC that sounds pretty good to me as well, a tiny bit better than the DAC within my Innuos Zen Min...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@big_greg I love it too. The tracks by Nora Jones, Lucinda Williams, and especially Beth Orton are spectacular!. My only quibble is that when I really want to crank it up, the “wall of sound” recording technique makes everything smear together a b...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Liszt piano concertos, Sviatoslav Richter. He was a monster.
Hearing loss and HiFi
That seems like really good advice @erik_squires. I have always wondered if and how much my listening room affects sound quality. This is a pretty good assessment tool. Thanks! I’ll give it a try.
Whats playing on your system today?
n80, there is an episode of Song Exploder podcast about a Khraungbin song. They have an interesting sound. I will listen to them some more on your recommendation. Tonight, I listened to Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. I haven’t listened to it from...
What do/did you do for a living?
Erik_squires: I enjoyed your quote, “I bring madness to the chaos.”I am not one to fiddle with anagrams, but upon reading your post, the following immediately leapt out out me as a summation of your chosen vocation. I see it as a portent.”Messdach...
What do/did you do for a living?
Dali Rubicon 5s, Simaudio Ace, Innuos Zen Mini and a Denon DP-2000 that I rarely play. I’m slowly selling my LPs. As Col. Walter Kurtz uttered, “The horror, the horror...”
What do/did you do for a living?
I help clean up the messes that cannot be cleaned up in the ER. Call me Winston Wolfe.
2k to 4k Streaming DAC
I purchased an Innuos Zen Mini with the optional LPS about a year ago. It is the first streamer and DAC I have ever owned. It sounds pretty darned good, but this is my n=1. Innuos does not have its own streamer software, so I first used iPENG, and...
is this the greatest live band of all time?
Steppenwolf-1970. John Kay with a black leather, one piece jumpsuit with Saturn embroidered on the front... and mirror shades. Goldly McJohn on Hammond B3, sporting this giant beard and huge red (?) Afro. Pretty amazing. I loved 3 Dog Night about ...
