Subwoofer for Magnepan 1.6's
Check out the Nola Thunderbolt, a terrific sub for music and HT. It retails for around $1700, although every once in a while a version one pops up for 1K +/-. The TB doesn't take up a lot of room and is relatively easy to place. It will integrate w...
Changing receiver from Arcam to?
I suggest you audition the Arcam AVR300, which is quite an improvement over the AVR200 (which is a nice enough receiver BTW, but the 300 is in another league altogether - much much better).I have heard the B& K, and owned various Marantzes and...
Arcam AVR 300 need help
First person I would call is the dealer - if you bought from a dealer. The other contact would be the Arcam USA distributor, Audiphile Systems Ltd, in Indianapolis: 317-849-7103/317-841-4111. I've always had very good tech support from these guys, ...
What are the best CD Player around $3500?
This is such a personal thing...for example, I did not care for the Resolution Audio Opus 21 at all, but I quite liked the Ayre and the Cary 303/300. The Ikemi didn't do it in my system either but many people love theirs.A lot depends on the gear,...
Meitner MTR101 Amps
I used a couple different pairs of MTR101s for several years and liked them a lot, especially for current hungry full range speakers - these little guys can drive nearly anything. They used to be paired with Apogee Divas back in the day.Plus, they...
Status = Dorian Acquires Reference Recordings
Congratulations! This is wonderful news!
Tube preamp with great pace?Cary, Supratek, etc.?
Yes I've heard a complete NAIM system. Great PRaT.I will put Keith Herron's preamps and amps up against NAIM any day of the week. The Cary preamp is a lovely sounding piece, but I wouldn't say PRaT is one of its virtues.I would say the Herron Pream...
What is the quietest preamp you've used?
Herrons. Take your pick of model, tubed or ss.I've had mainly tubed preamps for the past few years including the First Sound, the Rogue, a Joule-Electra LA100 MkIII, CAT.I wouldn't call the Rogue 99 Magnum "quiet", although it's nice sounding and ...
Tube rolling Herron VTSP1A preamp?
The only people I heard of who rolled their tubes put the stock tubes back in pronto. This is situation where I'd take the manufacturer at his word (and I normally hate stock 6922 Sovteks). Keith does voodoo with these things. It ain't worth the mo...
Budget bookshelf system for acoustic bass
This is easy. For a bass loving, acoustic music fan on a budget I highly recommend the Nola Minis, around $700 and a wonderful speaker. If you must have a sub you can always add a used Alon Centris or a Nola Thunderbolt to the system, but with the ...
Audio Physic with Solid State Amp
One of best systems I ever heard was a rig which included AP Avanti IIIs powered by Keith Herrons solid state monoblocks. This was a killer system. The only tubes were in the preamp. I don't think many tube amps would have the current and damping ...
Any suggestions on coolest running monoblocks?
I have the latest version of the Herron M150 monos. They are terrific amps and run cool. They won't wow anyone with their looks - chassis is very plain, black and small - but they are highly musical, powerful little guys. They are solid state, but...
I want to change from 2 channel to HT but what....
LOL, Flrnlamb, I don't think Meridian, Lexicon or BAT are shaking in their boots or anything, nor are the boys in Cambridge UK offended (they're too busy taking this one to the bank). For demanding speakers or SOTA HT you still need separates. But...
I want to change from 2 channel to HT but what....
Flrnlamb, I'm no techie, and I respect your experience and knowledge. I come from the high end audio world and up until last winter I would have totally agreed with you about seperates. I generally still do.But have you actually HEARD the AVR300?I...
Arcam or Marantz?
At least to my ears, the AVR300 is much better than the Marantz sonically, especially for 2 channel. In fact, I've found the Arcam to completely smoke any HT receiver I've auditioned, even those at twice the price. You would have to buy much $$$ m...
