Used Preamp for $2000 to $3000
I'll second the Herron VTSP-1a/166. Wonderful preamp for full price and a steal at its current used price of less than 2k.I used to own the Joule-Electra LA-100 MkIII which is also an nice pre, albeit more lush sounding than real life and a bit la...
best subwoofer for less than $1000
Used Alon/Nola Thunderbolt. Very fast, tunefull and deep true bass. Fast enough for planars or stats.
Bob Crump passes away over holiday.
Bob was a generous and helpful audio friend, always ready with good advice and good cheer. There was the CES I functioned as Bob's "fashion director", sending him a black derby that was...er...large enough to actually fit his head. He'd offered to ...
CD player in the $2,500 to $5,000 range
Thanks senna - since my Dealer hasn't gotten one in yet (!!) I wasn't sure what the sesignation was - I think of the players in series since I started with the 303/100 and worked up.All I know is, if it's better than the 303/300 and the old 306/20...
CD player in the $2,500 to $5,000 range
I'm a classical and opera lover who found the Resolution Audio Opus 21 lacking in dynamics for large scale music (opera & symphonic). Sorry, RA lovers, IMO it's a decent player but I just didn't like it. As always, YMMV. With your speakers and...

Trelja, does the Samsung do PAL>NTSC conversion? And does it have an internal scaler?
whats your idea of loud music.
Go Elizabeth!Actually, at many demos I've been surprised at how loud manufacturers and/or dealers like to play music through their equipment. All music, rock or classical or whatever. I know Harry Pearson liked to turn up the volume.I suspect that...
Maggie 1.6 vs Von Schweikert VR 4
To me these two speakers are like apples vs oranges. Totally different approaches to design, totally differnt flavors. Each has its specific virtues and weaknesses. The 1.6s might want highercurrent and/or more refined amps. And a fast sub like a N...
Audio Physics Avanti 3 Vs. Joseph RM33si
I've been fortunate to hear the Avanti IIIs on a couple occassions, on both long and short walls, from fairly nearfield to about 15-20' away. I think they are one of the finest, most musical speakers available. They need a little breathing room bu...
The very best new/used under $3k for classical?
I've heard the Zu Druids on large scale classical and personally, as a classical lover, I'd pass on them. (The Definitions are another story.)I dunno about the WAF thing. Depends on the W. Frankly, for classical I'd prefer...Any of a variety of us...
Plinius - experiences/opinions
I have a couple friends with Plinius gear and neither has ever had any trouble whatsoever. I suspect the sales reflect folks moving up to separates rather than any reliability issues. They do sound great with Shahinians.I gather that the pre sectio...
speaker advice' help needed
From a fellow lover of mostly classical orchestral (along with rock, jazz, R&B and acoustic) I highly recommend the Nola Minis. (They aren't really as small as the name suggests - more like medium size monitors.)Frankly, IMO many speakers (esp...
Need some help picking a subwoofer
Nola Thunderbolt II is deep, defined, musical and relatively affordable.
ARCAM compared to Krell
If you want power and quality with warmth and a step up from the Arcams do check out Cary amps. Their ss multi channel amps are killers.I'll also second the Plinius and BAT. Haven't heard the Sim.
What Denon AVR is Equal to the Arcam 300
None. Period.I've had several Denons and listened to their top of the line receiver. You can do much worse than the Denons but they ain't even close to the Arcam for music/sound quality.Personally, I don't find *any* HT receiver interface to be us...
