Vandersteen Speakers.. Are All Other Speaker Makers Doing It Wrong ?
I don't think Mr. Vandersteen even remotely implied his speakers are the only ones "correctly" done. He knew late Jim Thiel and John Dunlavy also designed speakers with the same philosophy. When I started this hobby, I auditioned Vandersteen 2Ce a...
DAC`S
@sheridanmartinj I own ARC DAC2 and DAC3 MKII. DAC2 is built-on one of the best DAC chip Ultra analog D20400 chip, 20-bit implementation and it is solid state. DAC3 is tube DAC built on a delta-sigma 1-bit DAC from Crystal Semiconductors. DAC3 u...
Need help picking my first tube amp
@holmz It is possible they did it after 1998. I saw this on Joe's Tube Lore "Special warning to Audible Illusions preamp users: The one you can say for the Sovtek is that you can run it hard and it can take it - and apparently that’s exactly wh...
Need help picking my first tube amp
@holmz I would stay away from AI units. They drive their tubes very hard and it will reduce lifetime of the tubes. Not sure if you have experienced this.
Need help picking my first tube amp
@audiomike33 There is a VTL TL 2.5 advertised by High Performance Stereo for $1,200. Make them an offer. https://www.highperformancestereo.com/preamplifiers-surround/vtl-tl2-5.html And one Cary slp 03 advertised for $990 in the US Audio Mart. ...
Need help picking my first tube amp
@audiomike33 I would look for a VTL TL 2.5 or Cary slp 03. I cuuerntly use Cary slp 03 and owned VTL tl 2.5 before. Both are excellent preamps with 12AU7 and 12 AT7 tubes. VTL does not have balanced input or outputs, but still a very good tube amp...
Cary Audio SLP-05 First Impression
@xcool Congrats on purchase of new toy. Cary slp 05 is a great unit and you will be happy for many years. I have slp 03 and I can only imagine how much better slp 05 would be. Only reason I am sticking with slp 03 is the remote control functions a...
Denefrips Pontus "burn in" period?
This is a SS DAC with R2R ladder and have separate power supplies for each channel. This should sound as good as it can ever be within 10-15 mins after warm up! If it is still not sounding good after 8 days, chances are it is not going to sound an...
Coleman Hawkins
@frogman  I have Cannonball Adderley with Strings record, a Japanese pressing and Charlie Parker with Strings, in a set of 6 LPs from Verve (1948-50, 50-51, 1952). I was listening to Charlie Parker with Strings yesterday that also included a live...
Coleman Hawkins
@frogman  Thanks for the recommendations. I ordered The Hawk In Hi Fi cd just now. I have Body & Soul. This will be a great addition to my jazz collection. I am a late entry into jazz and I am still discovering many gems. My friend got me mos...
Coleman Hawkins
@scottya118  Appreciate your reply. While many sax players did recordings accompanied by string orchestras, Hawkins did not. At least according to one of my friends and a jazz record collector/seller. He said Hawkins did one with a string orchest...
Audio Research Ref75 se
Vandy 2Ce and AR Ref75se will be a wonderful pairing of an amp and speaker. Cannot say enough good things about both products and the companies. As noted in a post above, make sure your preamp has XLR/balanced output because 75SE accept only balan...
Doesnt resistance mean same as impedance??
@emergingsoul I assume you know the difference between direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac). DC current has a constant amplitude and will not change with time. Amplitude of the ac current will change with time or frequency. Your ac pow...
Why I'm not adding a sub to my 2-way monitors for music
@soix I think @audioguy85 is referring to adding separate sub-woofers to speakers, but not to those that are already part of the speaker system. Not only Wilson, but Vandersteens Quatro have built-in sub-woofers. Those are fine. He is questioning ...
Subwoofer for music, how low?
@jheppe815 I fully agree with our assessment of frequency ranges of instruments. Granted some pipe organs with 60 foot long pipes can go lower, most of the musical information is on and above 27 Hz. I don’t buy this theory about reproducing "l...
