what impacts the sound quality more amp or pre-amp
I think you would be well served by trying the Mapletree Audio preamp previously mentioned $760 new, $800 with Blackgate Capacitor upgrade (Made by a retired E.E. Professor/Audiophlie in Canada). I think you would get the kind of change you are lo...
Blind Shoot-out in San Diego -- 5 CD Players
"If you happen to find yourself in my part of the world one day I invite you to listen to my EMM CDSA SE. You will immediately recognize that the sound is anything but flat and 2-dimensional. It is 3D and layered with a wide and deep sound stage."...
what impacts the sound quality more amp or pre-amp
It would drive your speakers, but seems like a lateral move from the B&K, I would also worry about such a old amp unless it gets the once over by a tech and possibly its capacitors replaced - it is a early 80s amp - no?Could you describe what ...
what impacts the sound quality more amp or pre-amp
I think the choice of speaker and then the choosing the amp to drive them is the most important choices in building a system; other than the recording and the room, they will have the biggest impact on the overall sound of your system - the change...

Not sure Sabai said that, only that you would find the EMM capable of world class 3D layering. Frankly, I would take any of the 5, and enjoy any of them without too much worry about the shoot-out worthiness.

If my CDSA-SE sounded holograhpic, wrap-around, I would be afraid I was wired out of phase; though headphones or nitrous oxide might have that effect too (so I am told). I don't know where it ranks, or how good it is, but I prefer it to the ARC CD...
Blind Shoot-out in San Diego -- 5 CD Players
I do use Running Springs with my EMM and other source equipment, figuring some line conditioning might make a difference - I ran out of things to buy - and a JPS Digital power cable thinking it might make a difference - since Art Dudley claimed th...
Why no heated gear?
I think warmth is the result of the equipment being on, not the sole cause of it sounding better, I think there is something else going on besides heat (though operating temperature is part of it - perhaps necessary, but not sufficient on its own)...

I wonder if the player with the $5000 X upgrade, also needs the $5000 PowerCell 10SE to sound its best. Now you are in "real" X territory.
Best Sounding Passive Preamp
Oh, one I forgot to mention that was first-rate is the $135 Pot-in-a-Box from Music Reference. On the down side, it is built with a cheap plastic box (though a metal box version is available for 3x the price), on the plus side, the plastic box is ...
Best Sounding Passive Preamp
At one time, the Reference Line passives were thought to be among the very best, any experience with their gear versus the TVCs and AVCs that have come to market since then?
Digitalmeisters - Thoughts on Olive.....
No, that is clear. Thank you.
Digitalmeisters - Thoughts on Olive.....
I had no idea Olive was having these types problems. They have been around for a while, and apparently have a fairly vigorous advertising budget - you would think they had their house in order. So the Airport Express is the device that wirelessly ...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
"But, even if we accept that, it does not mean that any given person will prefer it to their active line stage..."I don't think even George has, or would, argue that. I don't think any of his claims to with the subjective nature of things.
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Like I said, the maximum and complete set of signal information is at the output of the DAC/CD Player, there is nothing more to be extracted, whatever happens after that is some deviation from the closest thing we have to the "source". In a well m...
