Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Ralph, why have gain with a CD player with 2v or more output? Any reason? You make a good argument for why you might need a buffered linestage (though Roger Modjeski still advised me to avoid a buffered stage in my setup with his amp - he was perf...

"It's personal taste and system synergy, this fiction that there is an objective standard to what music really sounds like is so silly." That is true and I'm not sure anyone, or even George, has spoken about what music really sounds like, his clai...

Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
Cables of capacitance and you need a buffere or a TVC like your Bent (which I once owned)to drive cables with acculmulated capacitance. With your set up, the LSA won't work, it will become bandwidth limited, most noticeable in the bass. And the LS...

Blind Shoot-out in San Diego -- 5 CD Players
I'm not sure we disagree at the core, but perhaps in the degree of uncertainty involved in the process. Ultimately, you are right, the final arbiter is your ears, your music, your room, but there remains something to be learned from the crowd, as ...

sensitivity of amp, sensitivity of speakers, size of room, how loud you like it, and hearing acuity. now, if i switch the cd players gain to 4v, i never go above 12.

"perceived notion" - you know, I think part of that must come from the fact you might have to turn the volume control to 2-3 position at times and there seems to be an intuitive conclusion that there is something lacking, drive if you will, that m...

MRT, sounds like no 3rd-party review of any kind can be valid or serve any purpose, given how "different" we all are, and absent truly terrible performance in those things that can be measured that we think correlate to "good sound", there is noth...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
George, other than providing a product category that people can build and make money on, I suspect that active preamps have their advantages, like running long interconnects, and providing enough gain and impedance matching to work well with almos...

Seems to be the case with my CDSA-SE and VSMS:) And certainly as much so as with the ARC CD3 MKII and Accustic Arts combo I previously owned. As good as APL? Who knows. Not something I worry about very much - they are all world-class digital sources.
what impacts the sound quality more amp or pre-amp
I checked my facts for the second posting.
what impacts the sound quality more amp or pre-amp
The nominal impedance of the IIs was 8ohm with 4 minimum. I think the input impedance of the ST202 amps was 24 kohms, the Mapletree has 500ohm output impedance (should be OK)get be set with 0-10db or 10-20db gain, so sensitivity should not be an i...
what impacts the sound quality more amp or pre-amp
The nominal impedance of the IIs was 8ohm with 4 minimum. I think the input impedance of the B&K amps was the odd 33.2 kohms (you really have to double check with B&K), the Mapletree get be set with 0-10db or 10-20db gain, so sensitivity s...
