Remote volume control for preamp?
I use a Placette RVC in series with my CAT SL1. It works very, very well with no degradation I can tell and almost an infinite array of volume levels. Once you get used to this fine control it is hard to go back. For a sinlge source and with the r...
Preamplifier: Yes or NO ?
I think that if the current and impedance matches between the source and amp match well it is best to avoid the complexity, circuitry, and power supplies of an active preamplifier. You still need a very high quality volume control and there are no...
Cat Ultimate MkII Preamp mods for volume control?
Proclaim123 The Placette RVC is used in series between the DAC and the CAT. I disagree with Rfogel8 statement regarding the use of another volume control and the sound quality suffering - at least in relationship to the Placette RVC. I absoultuely...
Preamp for Quad 989 and Quicksilver v4
Why not the Quciksilver preamp?
Trying to extract more from my Vandersteen
When I owned the 3A Sigs, I used Audioquest for a while, and the system sounded very good. I then tried Alpha-Core Goertz silver and thought the system sounded better yet. Don't what the pricing is for Goertz anymore, but it was very reasonable at...
Amp for Placette pre
I would look for an amp with a high input impedance, preferably 100 kohms. You might find a Quicksilver Mid-Mono in your price range. Not sure how much power your Epos need.
ARC Ref 3 with CAT JL2 or do you need CAT SL1
I have not had a problem with my CAT pre or amp in terms of reliability - the amp would be a problem to ship for repair at close to 200lbs. However it must be considered in the top echelon of amplifiers of whatever topology or design. They are Fer...
Trying to extract more from my Vandersteen
How much are you willing to pay to get someting "better" than the 2Ce Sigs? I would also reread Krisjan's comments - I think he makes a really good point.
Why do no audio enthusiasts use McIntosh?
Of course it is not the only reason. But I think part of it is that owning McIntosh equipment may just be too simple for enthusiasts. Most, not all, enthusiasts want to try different equipment, agonize over their cables, find synergestic component...
ARC Ref 3 with CAT JL2 or do you need CAT SL1
As Dearing says, the three amps mentioned are all excellent. I own CAT JL2s and they are the best I have ever heard. But for the money you are spending, you must audition the ARC, VAC, and Lamms. The CATs will drive difficult loads and produce "so...
Cat Ultimate MkII Preamp mods for volume control?
I tried the Placette RVC and it will work wonderfully well as a volume control, as well as providing you with remote control. I have the CAT Ultimate and this set up sounded great, but the Placett on its own might be even better in the right system.
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
Teajay, that is a very impressive lineup of tube preamps. I think the CAT is up there too. I started this looking for a passive to try, but what has impressed my is the Placette focus on trying to build the "perfect" volume control. I'm going to c...
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
I spoke to Guy about my setup and I think it would be of interest to Merlin Speaker w/BAM owners. I'm feeding my DAC to the Placette RCV and that is connected to the BAM (Bass Augmentation Module running in battery mode)which is then connected to ...
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
Thank you Teajay. I'll read the review. It would be worth it if the active was 10% better - we all accept diminishing returns at this end of the hobby. What tubed units were you audtioning at the time you chose to go with the Placette?
Passive Pre - No Regrets?
I tried the RVC as a remote volume control for the CAT, the CAT sounds the same, or at least I can't tell the difference.I think the RVC is worth the price just as a remote volume control with no apparent harm to the CAT. If you own the CAT you kn...
