the gateway product that turned you into an audiophile Don't laugh, my gateway product was a Soundesign receiver vintage 1972! I loved music, at the time anything Motown and starting on Yes and Chicago. My old close-and-play had served me well, but I had heard Chicago 1 at a friend's house and needed ...
Replace my Auraliti As far as I am concerned, it is the software as much as the players features that matter. Though there are differences, all of the name brand streamer/players sound excellent. Check out what features you want (i made an excel chart) to compare the...
The Hi Fi Audio Quest: circa late 1950s First stereo? Around 1965. It was a 'console' set, that is: a plastic carry box the size of a small briefcase that had a turntable and removable speakers. I remember taking the speakers and strapping them to my ears with a belt to get the loudest ...
New DAC, what should I look for? For features, I would make sure it has: An excellent, linear power supply; I2S input, DSD512 and 32b/768k capability. Balanced and RCA outputs. The DAC chip seems to be either not relevant or critical, depending on who you speak with. At the momen...
Apollon Hypex NCx500 ST NCOREx Stereo Amp - First Listen and Impressions I replaced my 30 year old, deceased Class A amp with a mid-priced class D amp (the Voyager GAN 350). I wouldn't spend much more than US$2000 on a class D amp, the technology is evolving at an incredible rate and ANYTHING you buy now will likely be...
Animals and audiophiles My Chihuahua was an audiophile and music lover through and through. She'd sit on my lap and listen for hours as long as she liked the music. Folk, jazz and blues for her but my favorite memory was playing Pink Floyd's Animals. There's a section wi...
Does USB cable length make a diference? I keep hearing, including from the historically (IMO) Paul McGowen, that cable length (within reason) makes no difference. I'm not so sure. I DO believe there is physical science behind wire sound, just it's either too complex to predict or beyond...
Streamer, no DAC please? I've been looking for one in the 2000-3000 range. I've settled on the Lumin U2 Mini, The Holo Audio or the Auralic Aries S1. Another option is the Lumin u2 (not mini) but it would have to be used. Iy depends a bit on what features you want: See ab...
Is it O.K. To Speculate Re: Company Stability Here? I've been in 'high-end' for some 45 years. When I started, the big names in electronics were McIntosh, Marantz, HHScott, Dynaco, AudioResearch, Threshold, Counterpoint, Krell, Levinson, AR, Garrard and many others. How many of these are still aliv...
What is the science behind audiophile fuses? In the entire power chain, from nuclear reactor through to your component, the piece with the greatest resistance to flow is the fuse, at least among the pieces you have any control over. It would logically follow that assuming input power had any...
Beware - FedEx Drivers are forging signatures for delivery confirmation Call the Fed-X number and talk to corporate. They take complaints like this seriously, though not seriously enough to reimburse you, of course!. Also, follow up with an email detailing the issue and that you accept no liability for packages left o...
Streamer output options I have a Mytek Liberty 2. It's a couple of years old, so totally obsolete! 😀 | |
Streamer apps critical One thing that flabbergasted me is that PSAudio felt ok releasing the AirLens, which seems a great streamer, without a native interface. I'm looking at buying a streamer in the 2-3k range and I'm afraid it WON'T be the AirLens. | |
Tweaking Your Speaker Placement Admittedly, I have big Maggie's, which are very sensitive, but I adjust entirely by ear. No measurements. I suspect the channels are a bit different, different acoustic environment, different sound between channels, etc. My left speaker is slightl...
Location of compoments. My components sit directly on the vinyl tile covered concrete basement floor. It's a huge pain for the turntable but great for everything else. No vibration issues, no wobbly and expensive racks and no acoustic complications. |
