Old Acoustic Research Amp Model AU Popper, I forgot to mention that AR offered a matching tuner, which I also owned, and I believe they marketed a receiver, which was basically the same integrated amp and tuner combined on a single chassis.
Old Acoustic Research Amp Model AU I believe the AR amp first appeared in the late 60's ('68 or '69 maybe). It is quite possible that some people collect them. The amp actually got very good press in Stereo Review, High Fidelity, and Audio magazine if I recall correctly. That's why...
Magnepan MG3.6rs and tweeter fuse blowin Hi, Magnepan's advice sounds correct -- usually this happens when an amp is driven to clipping trying to deliver a sound level in excess of the amp's clipping point. The amps you mentioned would seem powerful enough for most applications. How loud...
Old Acoustic Research Amp Model AU Hi Popper, I bought one of those AR amps new, way back when. It sounded okay, as I recall, though my system at that time wasn't as high resolution as it is today. It did, however, blow up on me for no apparent reason. AR rebuilt it at no charge an...
Electrostatic speaker repair in NYC/NJ Vtvu is quite correct -- Bill is definitely THE MAN for the job. He has experience with Acoustats and owns a pair of tricked-out 1 + 1s with Maggie ribbon tweeters (in addition to a wonderful pair of Infinity IRSes, which he totally revamped and r...
Vandy 5 Owners & Dreamers Hi Mark, I can't answer your question, but your title caught my attention. Once I had a dream that my beautiful and detailed electrostatic hybrid speakers had turned into (EEEEEKK) Vandersteens! What a nightmare -- man I'm glad I woke up! Happy Ho...
space above amp in rack for cooling As long as the sides are open I don't see any problem -- but if the amp doesn't use a toroidal power transformer, be careful what you put on the shelf above it.
Musical threshold event This is an interesting question. I have personally hit the "musical threshold" in many different systems, many times over the years. Each time I hit that magical zone I pause to ask myself, "Isn't it good enough yet?" It seems that by definition, ...
Why didn't this biamp strategy work? Elizabeth, I know you mean well, but your theory is totally wrong -- things just don't work that way. You're not giving "power" to the amps, merely a voltage signal. Since the input stages of the Dyna 70's were very high impedance (at least 100k, ...
Why didn't this biamp strategy work? I don't think that the impedance issue would give the results that Issabre cited -- however, if the amps' input sensitivity differs, that could make for such a scenario. There are many driver stage modifications for the St-70, so this is also a po...
Why didn't this biamp strategy work? My best guess is that you hooked up the two sections of each speaker in opposing polarity. If you had reversed the + and - leads of one set of amps so the midrange and highs were in opposite polarity relative to the bass sections you would probabl...
BUZZ IN SPEAKERS I have found that sometimes in my system improperly shielded interconnects can cause a buzz like that. If you have some spare interconnects, try swapping them out and see if the buzz changes or disappears.
Mesa Baron & CLS's - Impedance Problem? You should contact the amp's manufacturer, describe the load you want to drive and ask how the unit would behave. I went through quite a few amps (tube and transistor) and finally settled on the InnerSound ESL amp for driving my electrostatic hybr...
Tracking Force for MA 3002 Cartridge? That little bit of extra VTF really firmed things up. I can't believe how great this thing sounds on an old JVC direct drive TT with a Grace unipivot arm driving Magnepan 1.4s via Monarchy SE-160 hybrid monoblocks. Thanks again!
Tracking Force for MA 3002 Cartridge? Thank you Underwoodwally, that sounds about right. I'm going to add a bit more force and see how it sounds. :) |
