High res tube amps under $1.5k : TAD-60 perhaps?
I have a TAD-60 with the Superb-A upgrades and like it very much. That said, if you like to play your speakers loudly, it may not be the best choice.I think your Merlins appreciate power. The TAD-60 only delivers half power, 30Wpc in the triode mo...
Mixed Results from My Hifi
I agree with Boa2 that it's likely the problem stems from the equipment and the room acoustics. I think people who say that so many of their recordings sound poor because their system's are sooooo revealing are kidding themselves. The vast majorit...
Mixed Results from My Hifi
Hammergjh,Yes. I used to own the CDM 9NT speakers and as I recall, they were just a touch bright in the lower treble, as you have noticed. I think that coupled to your Krell solid-state integrated you may not be getting the most synergistic sound....
Speltz anti-ic's vs Nordost QuattroFil
I have a couple of the Speltz cables in key positions in my systems and would say they are warm sounding cables. I'm pretty sure the Nordost are less warm sounding. So for your application, I vote for SignalCable Silver Resolution wiring.
Choosing proper gain for preamp. Am I screwed?
Well, preamps can be built with widely varying amounts of gain, generally from unity gain to over 20dB of gain. And volume controls can have different tapers. Some give you most of their volume in the first half of their rotation and others are mo...
the changing sound of compoents over time
It's also possible that some corrosion and oxidation is taking place between the wire conductor and its termination over time. In which case, even if you clean the terminations the sound of the cables will still change.
Room treatment
Amthanh,That's a great link. Thank you for posting it. It tells pretty much everything one needs to know in order to choose the correct plants for his/her application.I don't care whether or not they work quite as good as expensive sound absorbing...
Will a Full Page Ad Guarantee a Review?
Mrtennis, the key word in your statement was "guarantee" and also the length of the advertising term, and the answer is still "NO". Because it may happen now and then is far from a "guarantee" in every situation... I hope you're enjoying your day....
Will a Full Page Ad Guarantee a Review?
Being a reviewer, I would have to say that Nrchy is correct. Normally I have no clue about who is advertizing in my magazine, and who is not.Mrtennis, the answer is "NO" -- a favorable review will definitely not guarantee an advertising contract. ...
Power conditioners for amplifiers
I've gotten better sonic results with the PS Audio UPC-200 AC power filter and it protects my gear, as well. YMMV.
Downside of sensitivity?
There are many factors that influence the final sound character of speakers, not just sensitivity. To choose a speaker based solely on this one parameter would be folly. That said, picking inefficient speakers limits your choice of amplifiers to h...
Pre for TAD-60
I'm not sure if it will work the same way in your system, but I got great results using a Monarchy Audio M24 tube DAC/linestage with the TAD-60. To me, the Monarchy sounded a little more "right" than the TAD-150 Signature preamp, but I didn't do a...
Best bearing for homemade turntable
Find out the specs on VPI's acrylic platters and then you could buy one of their bearings...
Audio Mecca Romance Ball Bearing
Is it steel, or ceramic? If steel, you could probably go to a local bike shop and get a few sizes to try. It is likely they would have one that would work for you.
minimze ambiguity when describing audio components
Ah, Mrtennis, I see part of your problem. The term "bright" is rarely used to describe the sonic range between 100Hz and 1000Hz. To me, upper-midrange brightness is between about 2kHz and 3.5kHz; lower treble brightness is between 4kHz and 10kHz, ...
