I should mention my systemBryston powerAudio Note M3 line preAudio Note 3.1 Dac.Various speakers. I really like my Dac and have no interest in replacing it so servers with a Dac are not required. I really the convenience that a lap top provides  b...

Buy a pair of ten year old $40,000 speakers for $4,000 or new ones at that price point?
I think a depreciation of 50% after 10 years would be closer to reality.Based on this. I beleive there are bargains to be had still in like new condition.
Worth of current system
I have got to a place that I am quite happy...... For now. I rotate speakers and gear somewhat so if I had to calculate all my keepers current value,  30k would cover it.
Tube Amps Watts vs SS amp
AR 9's are bi ampable. Consider using tube for the mid and upper end and SS down low. Or.. Pair your SS amp with a tube pre amp. There are some nice ones in your price range. It can be a very good combination.
What other hobby or hobbies do you have?
Really interesting. Audio gear has taken over the #1 spot from golf and sports cars, Vintage Porsche 911's to be precise. I just got tired of working on them. I still play golf twice a week but not as pationate about it since audio took over. Also...
Can one ever be "done" in this hobby?
To the original post. I actually think you can be done. But only if you beleive there are actually two different hobbies here. The audio hobby and the music hobby. I have to say I am mostly on the audio gear side. So as long as I focus on sound I ...
Can one ever be "done" in this hobby?
Nice attitude on your retirement. It is how I live my semi retired life (by choice) as well. Gotta keep it new and get the thrills.
Can one ever be "done" in this hobby?
I get satisfaction from accomplisment. I actually take offense to you telling me to get a new hobby. I did not say I did not enjoy it. I merely pointed out that humans become desensitized to almost anything when repeated enough. . Why did you do r...
Can one ever be "done" in this hobby?
I beleive it has a lot to do with creating that "1st time reaction" why do we upgrade? Because we have become bored with what we have. On  the "Happy Scale" I was just as excited with the first impression of my first higher quality system as I was...
Beginner choosing amp help
Separates allow you to upgrade as you see fit. It's part of the hobby. I will say only one more time. I urge you Google Bryston. It is among they very best Audio companies on the planet for gear and service. Best 20 year warranty in the business.
Beginner choosing amp help
Spread your money out. Look at Bryston amps 3b or 4b. $600 to $1000 they are Awsome. Their pre amps and dacs are very good to. You only need one good amp. Spend as much as you can on a good dac. It will be worth it. What about your Turntable and C...
Vintage Speaker Choice
I picked up a pair of Snell type E that were within the OP's price range. As good or better than any 30 year old speaker I have owned. I haven't even re capped them yet but these are definitely worth the effort.
