Best value speakers available
Tireguy, I think subjectivity is going to play a big role in this judgement call. But when it came time to put MY money down, Magneplanar got my vote for best value (in my budget range) and I bought the 1.6's.
power cords/surge protector-conditioner
Dekay, there are surge protectors available that don't, perportedly, affect sound as do most conditioners. Check out www.brickwall.com to start, their conditioners are reputed to be benign as far as influencing sound. The two outlet 20 amp version...
EAR Footers: Which ones, how to install?
Jeff, I believe that the Parts Connection catalog said that the large feet were rated to hold at least 15 lbs, so you could try just 6 & see what you think. It occurred to me that another good adhesive would be black butyl rubber that you purc...
EAR Footers: Which ones, how to install?
Jeff, I've just been using the EAR feet unattached, resting the equipment on them like cones. If one wanted to attach them more securely, I think that a silicone caulk type adhesive would be one possibility. I have been able to it peel off of any ...
Sonic Frontiers Tech Support is Great
I also have had excellent service from them. I ordered an Assemblage 2.7 Platiunum dac from The Parts Connection and they made a mistake, accidentally shipping a Signature version instead. When I called Frank, he overnighted the replacement to me ...
Perpetual Technologies P3A DAC
Treyhoss, I was making similar decisions about a new dac as well and definitely considered the Perpetual Technology products as well as MSB. Due to considerations revolving about rack size, the MSB was less than ideal. The need for 2 additional ca...
best interconnect for less than 100???
Gemini, with the usual YMMV caveat, I'd have to say that Music Metre cables have been extremely satisfactory in my system ( Assemblage 2.7 Platinum dac fed by Cambridge CD4se, Music Reference RM5 tubed pre, Belles 150 hot rod power, Maggie 1.6's.)...
The universal language?
Good potential for this thread Frogman. I've enjoyed expanding my musical horizons via the music of other cultures for many years now. In particular, Indian classical music has become a favorite. Several years ago, I got a chance to see phenomenal...
Old Philips CD as transport or new playe
Seldenr, like you, I've been pondering these things. I like the idea and simplicity of a one box design, but have been intrigued with the spate of glowing reviews for inexpensive (relatively) dacs. I listened to Arcam 9 and Conrad Johnson DF-2. No...
college kid needs help with budget amps
Another good budget preamp that is worth considering is the Cambridge Audio C500. Audio Advisor has them as demo units often. I used one for about a year and was very favorably impressed with it's price/performance ratio. Very musical sounding. If...
college kid needs help with budget amps
If you should decide to go with separates, the Adcom 535 and 545 are excellent amps for the money. However, in my experience, the gtp400 & gtp450 pre/tuners were greatly over rated. I was told by a dealer that these models were subject to a bi...
What s your latest buy? Happy with it?
Well, my latest purchase was a letdown. Having read several positive statements about Conrad Johnson digital products, I thought I'd try a CJ CF-2 cd player as an upgrade for my digital front end. (The rest of the chain is Maggie 1.6qr's, Belles 1...
tube preamp with satisfying low end?
Sibelius, I also own 1.6's and am using a Music Reference RM5III preamp which pleases me mightily with a very taut and well extended bass. I couldn't be happier with this pre and it only uses one 6922 in the line stage and two 6922's in the phono ...
Magneplanar 1.6 break in period
Marko445 is on the money, they'll improve for about 6 months with daily use. When mine were new, I used the supplied resistors to tame the tendency to sound overly bright. After acouple months time they really snoothed out and I removed the resist...
Aurex CD mat
Megasam, as far as I am concerned, save your money for something else. I used the Aurex mat a short time and decided that it was too great a pain to use after having to fish it out of my player with tweezers several times. If it sits in my player ...
