Tubes vs. solid state.
Cooljazzcat, thankyou for your opinion. I like some of Audio Research solid state amps like the 100.2. Also like Conrad Johnson solid state, makes you wonder why go the tube route. The McCormacks with Revision A, very trasparent and grain free. Al...
Tubes vs. solid state.
I want to suggest that solid state has become so good that it really makes little sense to use tubes. There are solid state products out there right now that rival tubes but improve on areas that tube gear can seldom handle. On the other side of t...
Tubes vs. solid state.
It depends what tube gear is being compared to what solid state products. There are good and bad products in both camps. Generally I lean towards tubes in the preamp with a solid state amp but to each his own.Anyway I think that all of us on this ...
equating class A to class AB SS amps?
I owned an Aleph 30 (Class A) amp rated at 30 glorious watts per channel. Based on the different amps I have owned previously and a direct comparison to them, it had no more power than just a 30 watt per channel AB solid state amp.
tube pre amp plus solid state power amps?
Yes I know the feeling in regards to tube amp maintenance and the desire to try a ss amp. There is nothing wrong with experimentation, only you can come to a conclusion what sounds good with your speakers, in your room. Whoever said that the pream...
Which preamp helps lower listening sessions?
I own an Audio Experience tube preamp (V2R) and love it! Whats interesting is that at a fraction of the cost it beat out most all the Conrad Johnson and Audio Research preamps I've tried. It also sounds very good at low and high levels & yes i...
How does one get off the merry-go-round?
Cdc, I'm afraid the counselor is now caught up in the merry-go-round. As soon he is ok we will sign you up! You already know how addictive this has become.
How does one get off the merry-go-round?
Detlof, I don't know how but I missed your analogy of a spiral. Your right, the merry go round does sound indfinite. I think you can spiral up as well as down. I definately want a ticket to the spiral! When your done with that, how about a ticket ...
How does one get off the merry-go-round?
Cdc, I like your plot theory! It places the blame squarely on the manufacturer & not the user. I think if you become too critical of your system you need to also look at the quality of the recording because even the most expensive systems cann...
I need help with my Equipment addiction
Macdadtexas, since Houstin is known for its strip clubs, & the wine is flowing like water, surely these are the distractions you might need to avoid your addiction.
I need help with my Equipment addiction
You know what? After all the years I been on Audiogon I'm proud to say I still have the same speakers, everything else has changed though. Prior to Audiogon it was me and my music, nothing else. I was running Adcom gear back then and I thought it ...
Audible illusions Modulus 3A or Klyne 6L
Wahwah, thankyou. Although I have owned my Audible Illusions preamp for a short period time & leave the preamp powered up most of the time, I have not experienced any tube failure yet. Reviews are important but the real test of any preamp is t...
Audible illusions Modulus 3A or Klyne 6L
Michael Femer's review from Stereophile Magazine stated he was thrilled with the Modulus 3A right out of the box and stated the 3A offers the highest level of performance at a bargain price. Further he states that the 3A is clearly one of the fine...
Audible illusions Modulus 3A or Klyne 6L
Just got off the phone to Audible Illusions and it turns out that the tube filaments are always lit because it actually lengthens the life of the tubes avoiding intial voltage rush. Yes they are recommending a specific Sovetek tube and they sell f...
I need help with my Equipment addiction
Macdadtexas, unfortunately most audiophiles do this to a varying degree but you need to recognize that the law of dimenishing returns do apply and realize that many future tweaks can do more harm than good in some cases. This is especially true if...
