New vinyl's noisy little secret
I have the 45rpm pressing of Adderly's "Somthin Else" on Clarity Vinyl. It is silent with excellent sound. Expensive, though.
Magico V2?
I just hear the V2 at a nearby dealer. I called ahead of time, and they were kind enough to set up a system, not unlike mine, for a lengthy audition. I asked that they locate the speakers on the long wall so as to approximate the distance/orientat...
Stylus Force Gauge
I use the Micro-Tech XMT-200 (200g/0.1g) digital scale which uses a weighing step off to one side as Doug suggests. The step height (surface for stylus) is approximately the same height as that of a thicker LP on the platter. It cost about $50 a c...
Why is the price of new tonearms so high
I, for one, am really enjoying this thread. Dertonarm has reappeared with a slightly less overbearing approach, which I appreciate. I loved the German/European history lesson as my mother is from Saxony - a town called Wurzen. She witnessed the bo...
Why is the price of new tonearms so high
I had assumed, perhaps incorectly, that this discussion of dynamic vs. static balance was in relation to gimbal pivot arms like my SME V. But Breuninger has me now thinking about the different effect each of these balance types have on gimbal vs. ...
Establishing a common analog listening bias
Dertonarm,I think this is a wonderful idea. If this catches on, I am sure that I will be introduced to some great, well-recorded music - both to listen to and to form a reference for discussion.Let me be the first to nominate an LP: Muddy Waters, ...
Why is the price of new tonearms so high
D,I apologize. I now realize that this question was to some extent covered in my earlier thread about the SME V VTF in April or May. If you still want to add some thoughts, that would be fine. Thank you again.Peter
Why is the price of new tonearms so high
Dertonarm,I have been following this thread with only mild interest until you mentioned the importance of "dynamically" balanced tonearms. I do not have a physics background, so could you please briefly explain the advantage of dynamic versus stat...
Has anyone heard the new Pass Labs XP-15 phono?
Hello Chashas1. I appreciate your comments, but you did not answer my question. The Pass amp and preamp are beside the point. I would like to learn more about the new phono stage. What system did you hear the XP-15 in and what did you like about i...
SRA Isolation Platform under a Turntable
Downunder,I have not tried the SRA Platform, but I do have my turtable on a rack on a suspended wooden floor. I installed two lolli-columns (steel tubes filled with concrete) in the basement one directly under each front corner of my rack. My kids...
Has anyone heard the new Pass Labs XP-15 phono?
Hi Chashas1,I'm with Dodgealum and would be very interested to know what system you heard the XP-15 in. I've looked up your other postings and see that you didn't really like the Pass XA30.5 or their preamps. That's fine but makes your above comme...
Is anything better than Aleph 3?
Celo,The FirstWatt Aleph J (I think) is another Nelson Pass 30 watt design for a lot less money than the XA30.5. Agian, you could check with RENO HIFI as they are the FirstWatt distributor.
Is anything better than Aleph 3?
Celo,I believe it is around $5,000. I'm sure it is listed in the recent Stereophile review. There are occasionally used or demo XA30.5s listed on the RENO HIFI website. Good luck. I have never heard it, but if it is anything like my XA100.5, it is...
What the most musical power amp for under $1K?
Used Pass Labs Aleph 3. 30 watts of single ended Class A solid state. Many reviews out there.
Is anything better than Aleph 3?
I was a bit perplexed with Jtgofish's and Unsound's comments that they each find the Aleph 3 boring because I agree with Gandme's comment. Then I finished Unsound's post and read that he prefers the X series. Now it makes a lot more sense. The Ale...
