At What Point is the Needle Damaging Records?
It may not be stylus wear but rather the suspension giving way. I don't know how to check that, but I agree with Stew, check the VTF/VTA first.
Magico Room at RAMF How good did it sound
Thanks Rasmika,That is quite a list of improvements. I love the Mini II, so this Q1 must be really something. Now, if it just had a different aesthetic... It really surprises me how divergent the opinions are about the Q1 and the brand in general....

Razmika,I'm a Mini II owner who has not yet had a chance to hear the Q1. Could you please describe why you think the Q1 is "MUCH" better. I'm hoping to audition the Q1 in Boston, but I don't think the dealer has one yet. Also, do you think the Q1 ...
Turntable speed accuracy
Thanks Doug. I have heard three turntables with you and your partner and none drove Paul out of the room screaming. I guess that means the two Teres turntables and the VPI Aries we all listened to together had absolutely no speed variations. I bel...
Turntable speed accuracy
I recently bought a Vibraplane isolation platform for under my turntable. It replaced the Townshend Seismic Sink which I then put under my SME motor controller. Isolating the motor controller from vibrations made a remarkable change to the sound o...
Best Record You Have Ever heard
Great thread! The one that puts the instrument in the room with me is:Mercury Stereo SR#-9016Bach/Starker, Suites for Unaccompanied Cello CompleteReissue, 3 disks at 33 1/3 RPMoriginally recorded in 1966I guess it is the scale and single instrument...

Ritmo,Thanks for that report. That's an interesting comment about price-points. I thought my Magico Mini II was competitive in the $18-20K range, but not at its final price of $32K. Now you suggest the Q1s would be good at $10K. Considering that t...
Getting hooked on 12" 45 rpm reissues
14" perhaps, but 16"? Imagine the size of the platters and resulting turntables. They would be even heavier and larger than todays large turntables. I agree, such a standard would have resulted in better sonics, but the cost and size sure would be...
Getting hooked on 12" 45 rpm reissues
I just got the Quality Recording pressing at 45RPM of Muddy Waters Folk Singer. There is the tape his from the old analog master, but it is better than my 33 1/3 MoFi release. The sonics are really outstanding.I do bring out the 45's on special oc...
What does mist racking actually sound like?
Dan/Doug,Could you elaborate? Are you spinning the platter by hand very slowly and listening for groove damage?
Why are modern arms so ugly?
Hi Doug,That's a very good explanation of our mutual goal. I agree completely with what you wrote, but you left out how you begin the process to get the VTA/SRA approximate before you do the fine tuning by ear. I assume you use a loupe or magnific...
Vibraplane: Should it be loaded close to limit?
The passive unit I just bought cost about $250 to air freight from the West Coast to the East Coast. Rather expensive. Kinetic Systems is in Boston and Sounds of Silence is in NH so that is certainly a more economical option if one can find one us...
Vibraplane: Should it be loaded close to limit?
I can report some very early impressions. I set up the Vibraplane under my TT with no intermediate slab to preload the unit. The improved isolation results in a more articulate bass with more weight and, subjectively, more extension. There is a mo...
Magico Room at RAMF How good did it sound
Audiofeil,Typical selective quote. I followed that with "That's fine." He doesn't get the Magico Concept, that's all. He admitted as much when he said "I don't get it" one post up. I agree with him. I'm sure there is lots I don't get either. You a...
Magico Room at RAMF How good did it sound
Hifi,I guess we just disagree. I would describe the "Magico Concept" as very neutral, very transparent, low in distortion. No immediate sonic thrills. It takes a while to get used to because they do sound different. You just don't get it. That's f...
