mc452 vs 601 vs. pair mc275 for classical music I owned a MC275 MKV for a few years. Great, gutsy classic amp with all around good performance, that sounded better than any solid state amp I've owned. I have a strong affinity for tube amps, so solid state would not even be a consideration fo...
VAC vs Conrad Johnson Amps? It's quite likely that the CJ Premier 140 was a departure from the typical CJ house sound, so take my experience with the Premier 140 as an outlier.
VAC vs Conrad Johnson Amps? I've owned one CJ amp (Premier 140), but it sounded like solid state, so I've kept my distance from CJ.I currently own VAC Renaissance 30/70 MkIII Sigs, which replaced a Phi 200 (missed the finesse of Renaissance amps), which replaced a 70/70 Sign...
Manley with Harbeth Monitor 40.1 Regafan, in my many years of owning 40.1's with a variety of amps I have not found it to be an absolute that the speakers require high power. I'm currently using 70 watt per channel VAC 30/70 Signature monoblocks that drive them effortlessly and ...
Manley with Harbeth Monitor 40.1 I've not tried Manley with my 40.1's, but can recommend Music Reference RM9 MKII, McIntosh MC275 MKV, VAC Phi 200 and VAC Renaissance amps. All slightly different flavors, but the best all-arounder of the bunch is the Music Reference RM9 MKII. ...
Herron 1A,, Herron 2A, Modwright LS100 or Aesthetix Calypso? I owned a BAT VK 30 and didn't care for it. I had a Calypso about 8 years ago and regrettably sold it to try an integrated. Ended up going back to separates and got a decent deal on a used Calypso Signature with good NOS tubes and have had it f...
Cary Audio Design CAD-120s mkII or Music Reference RM-9 MkII? Haven't tried the Cary, but love my RM9 mill with el34's. A great value and excellent sound quality.
Dog Proof Speaker Stands For Harbeth SHL5Plus Speakers I have two Goldens, Sound Anchor's and 40.1's. Sound Anchor's are bomb proof.

Jeff Rowland to what? If you haven't tried a good tube amp, do yourself a favor and change course. VAC Phi 200 monoblocks can be had used for around $10 to $11K. Also available now is a VAC Phi 300.1 for $8,900.
Line Magnetic 219ia vs Mc225 If you are going to be rolling 300B's, I have a pair of KR 300B's I was going to list and I have a pair of Black Treasure's currently listed. Good way to experiment with premium used tubes without breaking the bank. Let me know if you are inter...
Vac 200 IQ vs Ayon orthosII The VAC Phi 200 had the best bass and ability to handle dynamic swings better than any tube amp I've previously owned. They can be had for around $5K or less and are a tremendous value.
Power tubes for the VAC 300.1 I preferred the sound of the Shuguang KT88SC to Gold Lions in my Phi 200, but they were not as dependable as the GL's. Not horrible reliability by any means, you just had to have a spare or two handy just in case.
Dearly departed Music Reference RM9 Roger (Music Reference) just repaired, refurbished and re-tubed my RM9 and it sounds great. |
