What's the best sounding SS or Tube linestage pre? I will second Sugarbrie's comments on both Stan Warren and on the Conrad Johnson PV-10. I am continually amazed at how often there are PV-10's on this site for around $600. You can usually get one with phono for little or no extra money. The phono...
Brute power cheap?? Adcom Vs. Rotel vs. NAD I have owned a Hafler 9500 Transnova for the last 8 years or more. These amps were designed by Jim Strickland based on technology originally designed for Acoustat planar speakers. I have owned both NAD and Adcom amps over the years and feel the Ha...
What Tube preamp for NADC370 ? please I have been very satisfied with my Conrad Johnson PV10a preamp. I tried NAD, Adcom, Counterpoint and Audire preamps before the C-J. The C-J is not neutral but is very musical. I think it is best in smoothing out solid state amps. Used PV10a's go f...
Looking for Tuner/Preamp combo Hi Eric,I have owned an NAD 1600 preamp/tuner combo. I enjoyed it very much. Not much for sound stage compared to a good stand alone preamp, but very good tone. Comes with a remote. Matches NAD monitor series amplifiers and receivers for cosmetics...
CJ Sonographe SA-400 now discontinued Any good? I have also been following used c-j amps on this sight with interest. I notice the pricing between the sonographe SA-250 and the older c-j-2100 amp are usually very close. Has anyone heard both? Any comments on the differences between these two? T...
Preamp advice, all comments welcome If you love the sound of tubes, it is tough to beat a conrad-johnson pv10a. If you don't need a phono stage, the pv10L can be had for around $550 used. Very musical preamp and a great bargain, imho.Paul
Good SS match for C-J PV10 preamp Hi Johnny,I use my c-j pv 10a with a Hafler Transnova 9500 power amp and Spica TC-60 speakers. I have had the Hafler for over 8 years. I kept changing preamps, trying Adcom, Counterpoint, Superphon, Audio Research and Audire before I got the c-j. ...
Opinions of Hafler 9500 or 9505 Amp I have used a Hafler 9500 to drive Spica TC 60 speakers for over 6 years. The Hafler is a very detailed amp that throughs a huge sound stage. It is neutral and musical, but on the lean side, which has required some careful preamp matching. After g...
Cartridge help with Rega Planar 3 Thanks everyone for the help. I would still like some comments on the sound of the Bias and Blue Point. I have been told the Blue Point lacks bass. Are Audio Technica or Ortofon still quality brands. As I said, I haven't been into vinyl in 20 year...
Best Pre-amp for Bi-amping? I have a conrad-johnson pv10a. I biamp using mogami rca y adapters available for $10 from my local audio store. I emailed c-j and they said this should work fine. I probably lose some resolution, but for my system it seems to work ok. It is a chea...
Rotel RHT-10 Tuner Nanderson, what is your opinion of the Rotel RT 990 BX tuner? Is this one of those you are referring to in your comments? I have been considering one but I can't audition first. Thanks, Paul

home made speaker cable vs. the big boys kacz, I also use solid core wire from Home Depot and it was a significant upgrade over monster cable. I believe it is 16 gage fire alarm cable. I am curious as to the benefits of solid core vs stranded. I currently bi-wire Spica TC-60's and also r...
Uncoloured Speaker for $450 I really like my Spica TC-60's. There is a pair for sale on Audiogon for $600 including stands. I believe Jeff's Sound Values has a pair of TC-50's in your price range. Not the end all in resolution but very musical imho. Good luck, Paul
Subwoofer blues I have had great luck using a pair of Audio Concept Sub 1's. These are 12inch downward firing passive subs. I think they have been replaced by the Titans, which is essentially the same sub but is now powered. Audio concepts is a direct selling man... |
