Talking Heads Remastered
I think you've got it wrong, Phil. The purpose of these fancy new formats is to get different segments of the market to pay different prices. So first you put out a hi-rez version (a la Dylan's SACDs) or one with extra features (the Heads Dual-dis...
Talking Heads Remastered
And how long must we wait before we can buy the remasterings on a standard CD, for $3 less? Think Dylan SACDs.
Eating-up cheap dvd players
Can you replace the kids?If not, the only thing I can suggest is that Consumer Reports lists Panasonic as the most reliable maker of DVD players. That doesn't mean they can withstand the rigors of your little darlings, but it's worth a shot.Other ...
Is live reproduction the goal of audio?
No, the purpose of (specifically) electronics is to reproduce what's on the disk. What's on the disk may or may not reflect a recordist's attempt (successful or not) to capture something that sounds "live". But the recordist may have been after so...
When is unequal, equal?
That some audiophiles fall for this cable hoo-hah is evidence that you CAN fool some of the people all of the time. What put Monster on the map was marketing. And that's all the high-end cable business has ever been.
When is unequal, equal?
Bob, I think you should have this conversation with someone like Bruce Brisson (Monster, MIT cable designer -- invented the "shotgun" SE cable) I don't think he'd agree with you.Well, of course he wouldn't. It would be very bad for business. But t...
When is unequal, equal?
Well, anybody who believes that cables have "timing characteristics" that are audibly relevant will buy anything. But maybe that's the idea, huh?
When is unequal, equal?
Bass, however, will be affected because of the reduction in damping due to the higher resistance of the longer cable, especially with amps of higher output resistance, read tubes.Which begs the question, How much? There's been a lot of cant in thi...
Matching power at maximum rating for?
Keep the NAD. Dump the friend. Or at least, take anything he tells you about audio with a huge grain of salt. Speakers don't "work hard." They take what power you send them, and they do the work. If you're trying to fill a cavern with ear-splittin...
When is unequal, equal?
Well, GS actually did the analysis for resistance. If Honest1 would like to do the same for capacitance and inductance, then we might be getting somewhere. But just saying they're "important," without giving us any measure of how important, isn't ...
home theater speakers newbie question
You can, but you probably shouldn't, especially if you are a newbie. It is critically important that the front and center speakers match very closely. You can be a bit more forgiving with the surrounds.$1000 for what, an entire 5.1 speaker package...
Do I need a phono amp if I own an integrated amp?
Depends on whether the integrated amp has an input specifically labeled "phono". If it does, then you have a phone preamp built in, and you do not need an outboard one.
DAC with AirTunes?
BTW, can the Monster cable connected directly to my iPod's heaphone jack allow me to use a digital connection? No. You can't get digital out of an iPod (at least, not without hacking it).Which should tell you the limitations of those other products...
When is unequal, equal?
Good work, GS. Every time you move your head while listening, you have a greater effect on the relative weight and timing of the sound reaching your ears from your two speakers than anything caused by a modest difference in cable lengths. In other...
putting speaker vertical or horizontal?
True audiophiles should not use horizontal center channels, even MTM arrays, for music systems. For the reasons why, see Tom Nousaine's article in the Dec/Jan issue of The Sensible Sound (not available online) or on the Audio Critic webzine (subsc...
