The Best Amplifier Ever ?
Bear, the Halcro dm58 specs are in the October 2002 Stereophile. The measurements are indeed phenominal. Virtually square square wave, all harmonics under -106 db, distortion basically just above the test instruments measurement capability and so ...
Subwoofer placement questions
Since I have a spreadsheet open (taking a break from work), I'll put Karls' comments in perspective. The electronic signal would arrive at the sub-woofer about 2 one hundred millionths of a second later than your mains for an added 20 foot run. Mu...
The Best Amplifier Ever ?
Thanks Mike. It's great to hear an analyis from someone outside the press who has compared "The BEST amp EVER" to another great amp. Obviously, the Halcro is top notch but, as I interpret your assessment, there are trade-offs among amps and the ul...
Amp help for Paradigm ref 100 before I go insane
Both of your choices churn out 200 watts and that really is what the 100's need. The Rotel is built like a brick sh*t house and is high current -- I would go with that, but try to listen to each before deciding. Most dealers will allow you to try ...
How do YOU justify this hobby?
KF, I like your explanation! For me, it's all about the music and I just want to hear it like it was meant to be heard. I tell people I am in pursuit of the "live" experience and that everyone needs something to keep them off the streets (no offen...
The Best Amplifier Ever ?
Ah, responses like these just keep me coming back to Audiogon! Keep 'em coming! Ed, I'm in love. Beauty and sound? It's as if my wife were a diva soprano!
What are 6 feet going to do for me?
Audioengr, nice explanation. Two quick questions: 1) Would larger/more capacitors negate the need for a low inductance cord (i.e., is there a substitution effect?) and 2) Are shorter cords better than longer cords since the inductance would decrea...
What are 6 feet going to do for me?
There are many opinions on that. Where do you want to spend your money first? At the end of the day, everything from tweaks to pc's seem to matter even if there is no reasonable explanation. Since we don't have unlimited budgets, we have to make t...
Time coherence - how important and what speakers?
Unsound, you may have misinterpreted a comment just as I did when I first read it: JosephAudio wrote "more seasoned audiophiles voted for us at that show than any other system". At first, I thought he meant "audiophiles more seasoned than you" but...
Speaker placement for 2-ch AND 5-ch same room
Try the book Sound Studio Construction on a Budget by F. Alton Everest. Good stuff. BTW, don't drop your ceiling yet, I was talking in generalities. I'll be happy to send you a spreadsheet on these calculations so you can test different dimensiona...
Deteriorating speakers -- Class A today, C Tomorr
If I could expand on the question a bit ... when do the speaker manufacturers design for the optimal sound to be heard? Immediately out of the box or after an extended break-in?All speakers will "give" differently over the course of their lives. I...
Circuit Breaker for Dedicated Lines
Some have reported very good sonic results with ceramic fuses. But, those are not usually allowed by code anymore. Why? Because the 15, 20 and 30 amp fuses are all typically the same size and there have been too many instances where a 15 amp fuse ...
What could be instead of side walls?
Zaikesman, I was stretching a bit on that second point. Depending on the back wall and front wall distances, the side panels might make a positive difference (would have to work out all the ratios), but I'm with you and would do that as a last res...
Speaker placement for 2-ch AND 5-ch same room
Davehrab is correct. Dimensions which are exact mutliples do tend to reinforce or boost the same frequencies and create dips in some others -- in a 9x15x21 room, those boosted frequencies are at 188 Hz and 377 Hz with some fairly big gaps or dips ...
What could be instead of side walls?
All else equal, I'd move the speakers closer together so they are only about 5-6' apart if your listening position is only 5' from the speaker plane. It's good to start from an equalateral triangle and then tweak from there. Also start with the sp...
