Great Organists in Rock
If Billy Preston wasn't a Rock organist, "Grits ain't grocery, eggs ain't poultry, and Mona lisa was a man". He was referred to as "The 5th Beatle". Since I've always heard him on organ, I fail to see how anyone could think of him as an "electric ...
First Tube Amp: Advice? Keep spare tubes on hand?
I second Usblues, and after you decide how much you like the amp, tell us what tubes it takes. Remember, NOS tubes are a good buy, but must be purchased per Usblues advice.
How do we remember 1970s amplifiers?
Either Hafler, or Dynaco could be transformed into true "high end" amps by simply substituting their existing parts for the best parts available today. Successful businesses were created doing just that. When "Black Gate" capacitors were available...
Can the copy sound better than the original?
Always, when you copy on a good 2 track reel at 7 1/2 IPS, and you can double that with EE tape.

How do we remember 1970s amplifiers?
The music was so much better back then that we didn't know the equipment was lousy, and a good time was had by all.Since everything is relative, and none of us had rigs much better or much worse than the next guy; we all thought our rigs were kill...
Top 10 Snafus to avoid when building a good rig
The tail does not wag the dog. When people do speakers first, that is exactly what they are assuming. The dog, in this case, is where the signal begins; be it cartridge or CD. This is followed by pre and amp, and those are items that should be as ...
Anyone else noticing inflation in used gear $?
Inflation is not just in used gear. The price of parts is going up as a result of the value of the dollar. The best used gear has appreciated about 30% since a year or two ago, but it is absolutely a good buy. There is no better indicator of what ...
Analog Gurus - What cartridge after Grado Ref 1???
That hum problem might just be with older Rega's. Since I changed the motor in my Rega I haven't noticed any hum.Grado is the poor man's Koetsu, it's best for jazz and female vocals; not as good for Rock.
upgrading speaker crossovers
Replace those capacitors yesterday. Solen Metallized Polypropylene 100.UF 400VDC, 5% tolerance cost $38.81 per cap from Parts Express.
How do we remember 1970s amplifiers?
While I remember it as "all good", compared to today; that stuff would be junk.
How do we remember 1970s amplifiers?
I'm still using the the Dynaco. It was a "Quad" when I used it in the 70's. I had it mated with my "Quad" Phase Linear 4000. Since that time I converted it to stereo.Without a doubt I thought everything I had was "hot stuff" at that time. Now, I u...
Chicks With Guitars
Joan Baez; anyone remember "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down".
Tube AMP or SS
Although I understand electronics very well, electronics and audio are not the same. While those formulas come out fine on paper, they don't sound the same.I had a 150 watt SS amp that was barely sufficient, now I have a 70 watt tube amp that seem...
