What to do with my legacy CD collection?
1. See if any local college radio stations want them. Donate and take a tax deduction. We have a couple who play jazz. 2. Ck local used CD & Lp shops . They buy. 3. Last resort sell on Craigs List, eBay etc. Don't expect much money. Just sh...
Tubes for a pre stage... matched NEW or unmatched identical NOS?
Most preamp circuits are run class A due to low signal levels. You want them matched for gain and screened for low noise, again because the signals are low at this stage.
Spending a month's salary
I think this is a put on. You have a decent system for your space so what do you REALLY want to improve?? Musicality or detail (which is a bottomless rabbit hole)? You dont have a dedicated listening room so could spend $100k and not get a 20% imp...
Passion, or ..... Precision?
This just reinforces to me that The Absolute Sound was right in that the true measure of a good system is to replicate the sound of unamplified music, but that puts it somewhat at odds with almost all current music production.  Something put toget...
The Mood Was Ruined
You did not say if the record was new but since you had it cleaned I presume it was used. I have  bought and listened to new LPs for 60 years. No new Lp ever had a defect like that. Maybe some ticks or warped but never something like that. f it wa...
Low level listening
I am rather shocked that anybodys regular listening level is 100db. That itself looks like a road to hearing loss in the future.  An occasional peak, yeah.
Ripping CD's to hard drive
I just used my PC CD player and FreeRIP to make 16/44 flac files.  There is no advantage to upsampling. I tried EAC. It's very slow and I could not hear any difference. "Bit perfect" is a bit of a fools errand. Even the factory CDs and players are...
going from tube preamp to solid state
I have always preferred 6922 based preamps . 6922s do vary in sound between good NOS tubes and new units like the JJ which I liked a lot. That's just personal taste. see 1It's not a matter of better just slightly different sonics. Solid state is ...
Upgrade Cables or Just Upgrade Equipment & Live in Shame?
Can't we all just relax and enjoy the music?
Linn Sondek Phono Preamp
Pretty much any Vincent is a good choice. They offer tubed and non tube models for under $600. The 701 will even let you digitize vinyl up to 24/192
"High end" store snobbery
You can't confuse a hobby with a sales experience. Clubs and audio societies are all about learning. A retailer especially in audio these days can't be all things to all people. If you had walked in and said I want a new X (amp, speakers, system, ...
Sensitivity 86 v 90
I would be concerned. Tube amps don't usually double in power from 8 to 4 ohms so moving to 8 ohm speakers will probably give you even less total power to work with. Especially if you're already almost max'ed out.
Did the Old Receivers Sound Good?
Try to remember that quality of electronics in the 50s & 60s was judged by Stereo Review and Audio on their specs. Even design engineers of the era were spec oriented. When subjective listening came along with Stereophile and TAS specs went ou...
Tube DACs
All components have a sound. Tube DACs were not designed to eliminate the preamp any more than a tube phono pre is. Yes tubes into tubes could get too tubey but if they are well designed they will probably work fine. No generalizations are possible.
R2R Ladder DACs or All in One Streamer Solutions
I have been down this road when I had to replace my hybrid amp. I bought a Schitt  headphone amp/tube buffer. It was too much going directly into the new amp but worked well in my phone stage. I bought an RME ADI-2 and was able to just slightly to...
