b&w dm303 vs 601 s2
The 600 series lowest midrange drops out less then the 300 series speakers. They can also play louder. Tweeters are the bane of inexpensive speakers. I have a pair of 302s off of a NAD 314 and can tell you that both speakers are balanced to be ver...
what concerts do you wish you attended?
I have a long list of bands I wish I saw after they released their respective greatest albums. Too often I see them after they release the not-as-good material. Sometimes a guy gets lucky, though. In September I get to go to New York to see My Blo...
Building through the mail???
Good luck. You are in a tough position. Just so you know - and I am stating this only because I am certain of it - you will not get a mild top end from Paradigm, especially from nearly all mid-level electronics. Unfortunately hot high frequencies ...
my new black faceplate Aesthetix Calypso
The black calypso looks more mysterious and sophisticated. Good call.
Any reason to spend $$ on hi-end ICs for an iPod?
I have a RWA ipod with beyer's 880s and headphonia amp. I upgraded the stock mini-to-mini to black dragon and was surprised that I could not tell the difference.
Suggestions needed. Speaker audition...Dallas?
I suggest Proac and Magnepan auditions at audioconcepts. It would be a shame to miss those brands in your instance. Probably call ahead of time to let them know what you want to hear.
passive vs. electronic passover
Yeah, I am not sure why one would bi-amp without crossovers proximal to the amps. Active crossovers are commonly used in car audio, and why they are not used much in home audio is something I do not understand. Most notably, Linn owners in general...
Jeffs Sound Values in CA. PH not working/closed?
I remember I bought my preamp from him years ago. Of course, he was really nice in the transaction. Packed the hell out of that thing too...yards and yards of bubble wrap spooled around the chassis. It was fun to unwrap. I hate this part of audio ...
How isolated is your hi-fi?
Chris' recount brings up a theme I think about sometimes. In an eccentric hobby, we have to strive to be really honest about what we want in order to be happy.
Headphone suggestions
Yeah, Headfi is a good site. They are a fun and helpful group although they are stuck on hifi questions that are mostly taken for granted by me and standard hifi circles. There you can get a notion of the relative tonal balances between headphones...
Pet audiophile peeves - name yours
Uneven carpet thickness when I am trying to level my speakers. Finding good speaker designs is unnecessarily challenging, I think. Not many electrostatic options or viable horn options and very few dynamic speakers that are sealed or have active c...
B&W Name Change Theory
I have always replaced my cars' stock stereos, but its tricky to do that with newer cars without upsetting the delicate balance electronics and dashboards layouts. So, I will take this as good news as I like B&W's less expensive speakers. Mayb...
Soldering 101 for Audiophiles
There a lot of good sources for hifi oriented soldering basics online which are more elaborate than the fine advice here. Finding them via google is very easy, which is perhaps what Herman had in mind.
Need artist's name
Muddy Waters? Little Village?
New to headphones - what amp, source?
I am using an Imod'd 60gb 4th generation Ipod I bought from Redwine Audio for $425 with shipping and will probably buy mini-to-mini cables from Audiolineout to connect the ipod to my portable amp.
