What tube monoblocks? Atma-Sphere' can be very nice, very hard to beat, in fact if your speakers are up to it. The M60's like like an 8 ohm or higher impedance with about 88dB sensitivity or higher. This combo would provide sufficient spl's for most sane individuals. N...
Audiolab 8000A and 8000S I was paraphrasing the audiolab owner's manual. I have not performed the mod on my old unit. The manual does use the words "simple modification". If you feel confident in looking inside, you may be able to see for yourself if you can do it yoursel...
Audiolab 8000A and 8000S The 8000A has pre out and power in jacks and can be used as a pre or a power amp. To be used as a preamp, simply connect to a power amp. The pre and power sections are connected internally. To be used as a power amp, this connection needs to be re...
Plinius, SimAudio or Levinson $3kused? The Sim audio W5 is a great amp for the money. It sounded the best out of the three. I auditioned Classe, Plinius, Pass labs, Blue Circle, Bryston and Levinson. I thought the W5 was the best overall performer and would have (and may still be) my c...
I auditioned SACD today Rsbeck, you made some good points. However, Rec found that the performance of SACD did not clearly better CD or LP. Personally, it appears to me that the trend that the mass market is being fed is convenience rather than sound quality. The masses ...
Best Used Solid State Amp for less than $5000? Two different animals. Go for the plinius if you have the cash to spend. FWIW, to my ears, the W5 betters the X250. Keep in mind that is my opinion. I've spent time with all three amps (dozens of hours auditioning for my next amp).Cheers
Sound is too big for my room. I didn't mean room correction per se. I was referring to simple adjustments such as placement of furniture, curtains, an area rug, etc. to help absorb or diffuse some of the reflected sound in the room. These sorts of things helped tame my listeni...
Sound is too big for my room. You may want to consider some room treatment. Check out the Rives forum on audio asylum. The room is often the most overlooked piece of the system.
Sonic Frontiers Line 2 / Classe CP-60 for CAM-200 I"ve heard both with the CA200/201 and preferred the Sonic Frontiers. What speakers are you using now? What do or don't you like about their sound?
If you were to carry a tube product line? My first experience with high end audio was with a small audio "boutique" located along my walk to university. It was a small store which carried Sonic Frontiers products. Since then I have heard a number of different lines of gear but the the Son...
PassX-250 vs PassX-350 Bhouser, Muralman1, I may have lost some of the details in paraphrasing what I was told so I thought I'd post the response verbatim. Sorry for any mix-up."In circuit design the X150 and X250 are verysimilar. They both use some localized feedback a...
PassX-250 vs PassX-350 Muralman1,I thought that was what I said. Rather, what Peter said. For $4000 used I'd also opt for the X350
PassX-250 vs PassX-350 I spoke to Peter at Pass and he helped me with some of the differences between the amps. The x150 and x250 have similar circuit designs with only some localized feedback around the output stage. The X350 and larger amps have the zero negative feed...
Johnny Cash - Rest in Peace I believe it was Bono who said "Every man is a sissy compared to Johnny Cash". The world thanks you for your gift to us, Johnny.
Considering full upgrade over next year Ok. Following Drubin's advice I found an nice set of Meadowlark Hotrod Shearwaters and am soooo thankfull for his advice. I absolutely love the sound. B&W's were a TAD bright! I'll be auditioning the Plinius 102 and the Sim Audio W5 this month... |
