regarding shielding
mt10425, could you provide a little more detail:What is the construction (or brand) of your (single-ended?) interconnects? Just because cables are unshielded doesn't necessarily mean they will be noisy if they don't pass near power cords (or equip...
RCA to balanced
Sell the BAT preamp AND the single-ended phonostage and buy an Atmasphere MP-3 fully balanced preamp with a fully balanced ALL-TUBE phonostage built right in! You will need an XLR-terminated phono cable (from the tonearm to the MP-3's phono input)...
shipping boxes for heavy electronics
When using a pallet, ask the shipper (or do it yourself) to attach cardboard pyramids to the top of the box(es). this is a very common technique (trick) used to prevent carriers from stacking other stuff on top of your shipment ;~)
regarding shielding
You are referring to a "floating shield" (one end 'floats' -- is not connected.) This is exactly to PREVENT any curent flow, which would result in hum and RFI being mixed with the audio signal (and thus winding up in your speakers!)Having the shie...
Static electricity: Unique to Vinyl Systems?
I agree with Al (airborne rather than system borne.) In addition to the sources of RFI he mentions, I'd like to add two more: (1.) the power cables on ANY digital equipment, and (2.)the RFI created by static discharge such as people walking across...
Why does the copy sound better than the original
I do see where you're going with that.Which is the part that's really disturbing . . . . Anyway, it's apples to oranges
Why does the copy sound better than the original
Al, I didn't take the time to read the threads you mentioned, but (my understanding is) this was settled a long time ago; and the overwhelming conclusion (at that time anyway ;~) had to do with the fact that a burned CD has (physically) real 'pits...
Compatability of Koetsu Black Urishi with ARC PH-7
Did you buy the UrUshi yet? If you buy it from Japan, you can get it with a .6mV output. If you have an American version, it probably has .4mV output and the PH-7 should have enough gain to work with cartridges with as low as .2mV output. As for th...
10 gage electrical wire for speaker cables?
Why not just buy a pair of Speltz Anti-cables? They're very inexpensive and made of better wire (magnet wire) which is insulated with a tough polymer coating. And No, they won't damage your speakers, although if you use (uninsulated) hardware stor...
Preamp with quality MC phono section
Bob, I'm not really familiar with your preamp (website?) but it appears your system is currently single-ended throughout? The other units you listed are all very fine first-rate equipment, but all single-ended units; except I think the Doshi is av...
Preamp with quality MC phono section
Your initial list is admirable, and your budget is realistic. It would be nice if you'd publish your system so we could see what else is involved. But, so far so good ;~) You've left a very special contender off of your list, not surprising, but I...
Cartridge Break-In
One technique that works very well when breaking in cartridges, especially those with the latest temperature and moisture resistant polymers every manufacturer seems to use now for the supensions, is to slightly 'over-deflect' or 'over-stretch' th...
A sub with L & R RCA inputs???
Sorry about the double-posting. It's not me, honest! ;~))
A sub with L & R RCA inputs???
If you like tubes, then the best place to reap their benefit(s) is in a device that actually amplifies the signal. That would be amplifiers (obviously;~), phonoamps, and microphone amps. Preamplifiers are basically source selectors and volume/bala...
A sub with L & R RCA inputs???
Hi Shake ;~)First of all, did you mean your speakers are 16 feet away from your listening position (not 16 feet apart, which is pretty wide apart?)If you like tubes, then the best place to reap their benefit(s) is in a device that actually amplifi...
