Should I buy an SME 30/12A for 15K?
@fjn04 Correct. Unfortunately.  There's a used one on another site but the OP wants new.

@essrand This is playing out as anticipated. You might regroup and start over. Suggest something like an ARC PH6 phono amp and Lyra Delos cartridge to start getting a renewed feel for analog. Then buy some 60s records on Discogs.
Totally Ridiculous....Auditions on YouTube!
Roy, you're starting to sound like a Flat Earther defending the indefensible. All other things being equal, it is possible to hear the difference in say, changing a cartridge or speaker, or tubes in a HD YouTube video. You can hear one being brigh...

Come to think of it, we don't know what cartridge and phono stage you are using.

Until you know what cartridge and phono amp the dealer demoed the SME with, you cannot know how the SME sounds in your rig. $15k is enough to ask the dealer over to demo it in your place.

When CDs first came onto the market in 1982 .......
You're mistaken.  CDs were mastered with an audio stream turned up to 1.2v (?) whereas all analog recordings (vinyl, tape etc.) had been mastered using an analog audio stream of 0.8v Is this on the money or am I mistaken ... ??

Certainly not audition quality but of course you can ascertain qualitative differences in well-recorded YouTube video. If you can’t, there’s an issue with your aural apparatus and cognitive interpolation, and you shouldn’t be in hi-fi.
