best concert venue
Yoshi's is also missing atmosphere IMHO. I've been there twice and it's just too clinical, too "corporate" - no smells, no rough edges and certainly no smoke. How can you have a jazz club without smoke - even dry ice fake smoke would be better - l...
Preamp Deal of the Century
bwhite - you're right of course. I don't have an idea how long it takes Mick to actually make one stock Chenin from start to finish given he has all the parts to hand - I'd imagine not that long after all these years doing it. I expect he has help...
Preamp Deal of the Century
Yes, I got the same response as well and I'm sympathetic. I suggest we all not bug him too much while he resolves his issues with his suppliers - none of this is his fault...
Trelja's new tube amplifiers - Granite 860.1
Hi guys. I've been with my Granites for almost a week now and am very pleased so far even though the tubes are not yet burned in. Immediately I noticed everything I expected moving from a 200 wpc solid-state to 30 wpc SET: less slam, more sweetnes...
HE2004 in San Francisco this year
I've heard from at least one manufacturer that he'll be skipping HE2004 because CES is so close to it. I'm sure it will be good anyway - I'll certainly be there.
Trelja's new tube amplifiers - Granite 860.1
Trelja - I'll race you to post the first impression of Granite 86x and Merlins together! ;-) My Granites are scheduled to arrive on Wednesday and I will be "working from home" that day. Chenin will be arriving within the month I hope so I should h...
Trelja's new tube amplifiers - Granite 860.1
I've gone and bought a pair of 861s from Stephen - been hankering after Granites for a while now and this thread made me jump to action. I'm pairing them with Merlin VSM-Ms, Cary 306/200 CD/transport and have a Supratek Chenin on order due in Augu...
Who u gots da most uv???
Just glancing at my CD collection: Eric Clapton CDs (mostly so-so recordings from the 90s and all the obvious ones including the Crossroads box set) and Fila Brazillia (totally eclectic and top-notch English electronic duo from Hull).
SACD - Dying already?
It's quite likely SACD (or to a lesser extent DVD-A) will never find its niche with audiophiles because we all prefer vinyl, given the choice. However, SACD is definitely going in the right direction because: (a) it's less of a compromise than CD ...
Home Entertainment Show in SF in November 2004
I believe the SF show was already organized in advance of the NY one - it was advertized on the site before the NY show had started. It's a bit close to CES2005 so it's likely several manufacturers will skip HE2003 SF and just do CES. At least tha...
Merlin owners,any thoughts.......
I am using Homegrown Audio Silver Lace ICs throughout. One of the great audio bargains IMHO ($210/1m) and so fundamentally transparent. Silver really is the business!
Where R U?????
Born in England, been in Mountain View, California for almost 4 years now.
Merlin's BAM with ERS and puck tweak
The changes are going to be really subtle. For me, it seems like the noise floor has dropped a bit and the instruments and clearer and better separated. I'm also hearing a slightly deeper soundstage. I couldn't tell you if this is the ERS - it cou...
TV's... what does the typical audiophile have?
I have an old 30-something inch Mitsubishi and it's between the speakers so I want to get rid of it. TV in the US is so mind-numbingly dull and, to me, the antithesis of high-end audio. I have no place for it any more. We watch movies on the TV bu...
Merlin's BAM with ERS and puck tweak
I got three pieces in total: I put one on the BAM and the other two on my Cary 306/200, sort of in the middle. Not sure where the DAC is as I haven't opened the case but I guess it's in the middle somewhere.
